The MARS Senior Experimentation Support Scientist/Engineer will support the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) with Directed Energy (DE) Mission Planning and Support at Kirtland AFB, NM. The Management Assistance for Research and Science (MARS) contract provides for professional engineering and management expertise supporting research and development conducted at the AFRL Space Vehicles Directorate (RV) and Directed Energy Directorate (RD).

What you will be doing:

  • Provide Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) expertise and advisory support to AFRL/RD Strategic Development Planning and Experimentation (SDPE) and the DEW Experimentation Campaign
  • Enable AFRL/RD role as Experimentation Campaign Deputy and IPT Lead
  • Provide modeling, simulation, and analysis (MS&A), wargaming support, and high energy laser / high-power microwave support to experimentation
  • Assist and advise key leaders on DEW campaign management; contribute to the development of the DEW Execution Plan and overarching analysis plans, test plans, final reports, and associated briefings for each planned experiment
  • Support the AFRL/RD DEWX Program Manager preparation and execution of Program Management and Program Executive reviews with the AFRL/RD Director
  • Review responses to invitations to participate and requests for information from industry
  • Inform selection panels identifying systems to proceed in the DEW campaign
  • Support concept of operations (CONOPS) development for all DEW Experimentation Campaign experiments
  • Author, edit, and brief experimentation reports to Executive US Air Force forums
  • Communicate across governmental and non-governmental agencies with equities in the DE Community of Interest
  • Manage risk to experiments from system failures, immature technology, or external certifications required before user evaluations or testing

What you’ll need:

  • Extensive senior-level directed energy experience from a range of activities including government, industry, and academia
  • Experience in program management, operations research analysis, systems engineering, and test and evaluation
  • Experience leading IMS reviews, and organizing IPTs critical thinking skills
  • Familiarity with USAF Directed Energy experimentation
  • Current or recent Secret Security clearance with Top Secret Eligibility
  • PhD in engineering or science disciplines preferred
