The Team

The Launcher Team is a cross-functional group of technicians and engineers working to constantly improve our Ground Support Equipment. We develop the structures necessary to transport and position rocket for launch and provide the systems capable of maintaining strict environmental states within the rocket. Our team touches all aspects of system design from the creation of model fluid systems capable of loading and offloading propellants on the rocket, to ground based rocket battery charging and communication systems and water systems used for fire suppression and flame control. The team also qualifies subsystems by designing and supporting testing operations.
Our modular Launcher system can be packed into a shipping container to be deployed anywhere in the world and assembled in a matter of days.  Launcher gear is specifically designed to enable a high launch cadence, allowing Astra to lead the way to daily access to space for the first time in human history.

The Opportunity

Come join a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians providing industry leading solutions for liquid propulsion launch vehicle ground support equipment. As an engineer on this team you will provide the specification, analysis, design, fabrication/procurement, assembly and test of fluid/mechanical systems that support the Launch Operations Team.  This includes but is not limited to all propellant handling functions, inert gas storage and transfer, structural assemblies required to safely transport the launch vehicle from support buildings to the launch pad, the entire launch structure, and all aspects of pad safety/fire suppression.  Emphasis on minimizing cost, enabling rapid deployment schedules, efficient in-field operations and ease of maintenance are key to success.
This position goes beyond our immediate team as you will also work closely with the the First Stage, Upper Stage, Avionics and Launch Operations Teams.

How you’ll help us achieve your mission:

  • Own entire sub systems of our launcher, with minimal requirements and oversight to create design solutions from initial concept to detailed solid models and released drawing packages including document assembly, maintenance, and operation instructions. Report on schedule and budget as required.
  • Design fluidic routing layouts, line-sizing, and source parts for future iterations of the Launcher.
  • Create qualification testing plans for your system and support execution.
  • Collaborate with a cross-disciplinary team of system owners including electrical, mechanical, controls, and software engineers to support launch operations; conduct design reviews and implement feedback/obtain stakeholder buy-in and to verify and document cross-team requirements are satisfied.

Why we value you:

  • 5+ years of experience designing, sizing, specifying equipment for, and testing fluid systems
  • Design of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
  • Fluid routing in CAD (NX preferred)
  • Experience with low, and high pressure, >6000 PSI, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Experience with cryogenic systems and best practices around expansion joints
    Experience with industrial valves, reliefs, pumps, fittings, and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of vendors for all the above equipment.
  • Familiar with ASME B31.3 process piping code
  • Familiar with AWS D10.18 pipe welding code
  • Comfortable with 1-D fluid and thermal analysis to help predict performance and size of system

Desired Multipliers

  • 8+ Years of experience
  • Experience with TEA-TEB and pyrophoric mixtures
  • Familiarity with 91-710 Air Force safety standards
  • NX routing application
  • Experience with FEA thermal and stress analysis (NX Nastran preferred)
  • Drafting and GD&T for fluid systems
