The Company

We are Astra. Our mission is to launch a new generation of services to connect and improve life on earth. We are a small, highly ambitious team with deep technical expertise who love to build things and relish the idea of a grand challenge.

We strive to deliver routine access to earth orbit for enterprises launching services powered by small satellites. Building on over a decade of technology development in rocket propulsion, structures, and avionics, we are applying an agile approach to space launch.

Our headquarters in Alameda, between San Francisco and Oakland, is a sprawling campus supporting full cycle rocket production (e.g. design, manufacturing, test) and mission control. Come thrive at Astra!

The Team

The Launcher team is responsible for analysis, design, fabrication, and testing of all ground based launcher infrastructure.  As a member of the Launcher team, the Launcher Technician will specialize in the fabrication and assembly of launch systems, develop build documentation, capture hardware anomaly disposition/corrective action, work with Test team to test systems, and provide engineering design input.

The Opportunity

Your new team is responsible for all of the ground side equipment required to safely and efficiently conduct integrated rocket testing and launch campaign procedures.  As a Launcher Technician, you will specialize in the assembly of rocket launcher components and assemblies spanning hydraulic actuation, cryogenic plumbing, high-power electrical, high-pressure pneumatics, fire-suppression and mechanical/structural systems.  Additionally, you will develop build documentation, capture hardware anomaly dispositions, contribute to and implement anomaly corrective actions, work within team to qualify the launcher, and provide engineering design input for future systems.

How You’ll Fulfill Your Mission

  • Build – Work with engineering drawings and schematics to create launcher assemblies for both fluidic and electrical projects.  Working as an individual or within team, you find the balance of understanding the intent and proceeding with limited guidance vs collaborating often to ensure the proper end result.
  • Test – Perform a variety of checkouts including hydrostatic pressure testing, leak checking, and functional tests.  You understand all aspects of the system and the intent of the test.  Employee safety is put above all else and is a responsibility of everyone on the team.
  • Document – Keep track of, document, and communicate consistently during the assembly process.  Team awareness of schedule is critical.
  • Troubleshoot – Use your experience with building systems to help troubleshoot issues found in the field.

Why We Value You

  • Assembly and checkout of complex components / systems from assembly drawings
  • Contribute to early design concepts utilizing your assembly and test expertise
  • Maintain a professional and neat work area
  • Welding, machining, tube flaring / bending / routing
  • Electrical wiring, routing, and layout
  • Document hardware condition/discrepancies/corrective actions

Desired Multiipliers

  • At least 5 years experience in mechanical / aerospace R&D environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with high pressure thermal / fluid systems involving valves, tanks, regulators, high speed instrumentation.
  • Expert assembly skills, ability to read assembly drawings
  • Experience with fabrication and assembly tools
  • Proficient with Windows and browser-based email and collaboration tools
