Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world. The company’s suite of lunar landers delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals. The company is also developing advanced space robotics capabilities such as terrain relative navigation, mobile robotics for lunar surface operations, and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications. Originally spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2007, Astrobotic is pioneering affordable planetary access that promises to spark a new era of exploration, science, tourism, resource utilization, and mining. Astrobotic is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Astrobotic is seeking a Conceptual Design Engineer to develop visionary space system concepts for lunar infrastructure/mobility and space robotics bids and proposals. This position will report to the Vice President of Business Development and will work closely with subject matter experts throughout Astrobotic. Successful candidates will have a multidisciplinary engineering perspective and first-hand knowledge of the full lifecycle of spacecraft development.


  • Synthesize new technical designs from a clean sheet to pursue new business opportunities.
  • Create viable technical concepts that start from the art of the possible and can be transitioned to executable systems upon funding award.
  • Work with subject matter experts to establish competitive concepts for seeding opportunities with customers, as well as prepare for upcoming proposals.
  • Write proposal prose and draft rough diagrams to describe technical concepts.
  • Deliver material on developed technical concepts that can be incorporated in written or presented sales material.
  • Establish cost models that range in maturity from ROMs to fully detailed budgets for new technical concepts.
  • Develop work breakdown structures, integrated master schedules, and risk posture matrices to inform business decisions and proposal content.
  • Work with system engineers to develop program requirements and objectives following initial development of concepts.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively subject matter experts.
  • Familiarity and experience with planning, preparation, delivery, and closeout of spacecraft programs.
  • Awareness and fluency with supplier relationships and supply chains.
  • 5+ years managing technical space projects in a fast-paced environment with accountability for lifecycle planning and execution
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas of spaceflight or satellite systems development: structure/thermal design and analysis, avionics, power systems, propulsion, flight software, robotics, mission services, systems engineering, mission operations, integration, or mission management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn on the fly, work autonomously, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • B.S. or higher in an Engineering discipline.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience leading life cycle development of mission critical spaceflight or satellite systems or subsystems.
  • Project management experience in support of government customers.
  • Demonstrated experience leading spaceflight projects consisting of 10+ employees, including the development and management of project budgets, schedules, risks, and technical performance objectives.
  • Demonstrated direct, hands-on experience with space system integration and testing.
