Astrobotic Technology is seeking a Lead Systems Engineer to manage and lead the technical development of the company’s next lunar lander.  This position will lead the system engineering development for the lander, be a source of technical guidance to all subsystems of the lander and report to the Systems Engineering Manager.

Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world. The company’s lunar lander, Peregrine, delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals for $1.2 million per kilogram.  Astrobotic was selected by NASA in May 2019 for a $79.5 million contract to deliver payloads to the Moon in 2021.  The company also has more than 30 prior and ongoing NASA and commercial technology contracts, a commercial partnership with Airbus DS, a corporate sponsorship with DHL, and 28 payloads signed on for Peregrine’s first mission to the Moon.  The company is also an official partner with NASA through the Lunar CATALYST Program.  Astrobotic was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA

Responsibilities Include

  • Leading systems development for a lunar lander and other related space systems, including key decisions on systems and mission design
  • Responsible for managing mission and system requirements, lander design configuration and margins, launch vehicle requirements, ground control requirements, fault management, interface control, V&V planning, technical risk, and mitigation plan identification, through the entire development of the lunar lander
  • Provide technical guidance and direction for the lunar lander team
  • Work side-by-side with the Mission Director and key customers
  • Assist with technical proposals for mission opportunities
  • Prepare and deliver technical documentation and reporting
  • Lead technical presentations and/or demonstrations of the lunar lander during concept development and engineering development phases
  • Communicate with multiple engineering disciplines to resolve technical risks and challenges relating to the lunar lander
  • Communicate with partners and customers to resolve technical risks and challenges relating to the lunar lander and/or customer requirements

Required Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in multiple of the following areas: systems engineering, structure/thermal design and analysis, avionics systems, power systems, propulsion system, communication systems, flight software, mission management, S&MA, trajectory analysis, launch vehicle constraints, risk management, and system configuration management
  • Strong understanding of the space and launch vehicle mission environment
  • Experience developing space systems, from feasibility studies through flight and mission operations flight
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams
  • BS degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering or other related fields
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant space mission experience

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Knowledgeable of system manufacturing and V&V plan for space systems
  • Knowledgeable of Range Safety compliance
  • Experience in developing space systems for unmanned spacecraft or similar
  • Mission experience with spacecraft systems or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt proven aerospace practices and methodologies into a commercial, small mission, lean team environment
