Astrobotic’s Research and Development group, Future Missions and Technology, is seeking a Research Engineer to join our effort to develop cutting-edge solutions and advanced robotics capabilities in space. This hands-on interdisciplinary position will be responsible for system architecture, mechanical design, software prototyping, and testing. The applicant will participate in and, potentially, lead research projects requiring a high level of innovation. Applicants should have technical knowledge in robotics with in-depth knowledge of one or more related topics including: robotic systems, mechatronics, sensing, control systems, localization, mechanical design, or structural analysis.

Future Missions and Technology is a collaborative R&D working environment where each member of the team has a high degree of freedom, responsibility, and expectations. We are building solutions to challenging technical problems with the goal of making space more accessible to the world. The team has received more than 40 research contracts to date and has eight current NASA and commercial contracts in autonomous precision landing, mobile robotics, GPS-denied navigation and mapping, multi-rover exploration and planning, machine learning, neuromorphic sensing, and high-performance reliable computing.

Responsibilities Include

  • Prototyping and analysis of robotic systems that incorporate computer vision, state estimation, autonomy, and control
  • Robotics hardware/software system design, sensor selection, and mechanical design
  • Create and rapidly iterate CAD models of components, subassemblies, and integrated systems
  • Testing and validation of mechanical components of robotic systems including structural and thermal analysis
  • Component testing, field testing, and performance verification of robotic systems
  • Developing architectures and managing requirements and test plans
  • Working closely with NASA experts, university groups, and commercial clients
  • Presenting research to clients and the research community
  • Contributing to novel research and research proposals

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with fundamental robotics principles, mathematics, and algorithms
  • Rapid prototype development skills
  • Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD software suites, including structural or thermal analysis tools
  • Strong background in MATLAB and/or Python
  • Strong and demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work autonomously, learn on the fly, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills
  • B.S. or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or similar
  • U.S. person status

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with applications related to Guidance, Navigation, and Controls such as GPS-denied navigation, sensor fusion techniques, real-time controls, or path planning.
  • Experience with sensor processing for IMUs, Cameras, or LiDAR
  • Experience with robotics simulation environments
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis (ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience with electronics prototyping
  • Experience with basic systems engineering principles, risks, and requirements development
  • Experience with robotics or other complex engineered systems
  • Experience with writing research proposals
  • M.S. in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or similar
