Astrobotic Technology is seeking a Senior Electrical or Computer Engineer to serve as the lead engineer to our Avionics subsystem team. You will be responsible for assisting in the technical aspects of design, fabrication, and testing of hardware avionics or electronics components for various spacecraft subsystems. Experience in electronics design, embedded systems, FPGAs, and rapid prototyping avionics systems is desired. Technical reporting skills needed for delivering reports and presentations at the aerospace industry level.

Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world. The company’s suite of lunar landers delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals. The company is also developing advanced space robotics capabilities such as terrain relative navigation, mobile robotics for lunar surface operations, and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications. Astrobotic is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Astrobotic was selected by NASA in May 2019 for a $79.5 million contract to deliver a suite of NASA instruments to the Moon. This mission will see the Peregrine lunar lander return America to the Moon with 22 payloads representing 5 countries.

In June 2020, Astrobotic was selected for a $199.5 million contract to deliver the NASA VIPER rover to the lunar south pole onboard the Griffin lunar lander. This mission will enable NASA’s objective to map water ice on the lunar surface, which in turn supports NASA’s plans for crewed missions in 2024. As part of Astrobotic’s Planetary Landers Team, you will literally be creating history as we define the benchmark for commercial delivery of payloads to the Moon and beyond.  

Responsibilities Include:

  • The development of flight hardware avionics, including computing, signal conditioning, control electronics, filtering, data acquisition, and
  • Providing technical and programmatic guidance to internal avionics team members (employees, subcontractors, consultants) and partner support personnel
  • Performing trade studies for the electrical and avionics systems
  • Analyzing and verifying different operating modes of the spacecraft by designing, fabricating, and testing integrated avionics systems
  • Utilizing partners and suppliers to identify and implement cost-effective, technically optimal solutions
  • Researching and selecting components from various external vendors by verifying that the components meet the mission needs
  • Testing of fabricated PCBs or integrated avionics systems through design verification and qualification testing
  • Communicating payload technical needs with avionics and power systems
  • Delivering technical reports of tests and advancements in avionics and power systems
  • Performing in-the-loop tests for selected hardware components

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4 years in of experience in electronics hardware development
  • Strong experience taking an electronics design from conceptual and requirements to manufacture and test
  • Strong experience in designing and testing PCBs with microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs, or similar
  • Strong experience in designing and testing PCBs with standard communication protocols such as Ethernet, Serial RS-422, Serial RS-485, CAN, SPI, I2C, or similar
  • Strong experience in implementing and executing a systematic test approach for custom PCBs
  • Schematic and board design proficiency using software like Altium, Eagle, OrCAD, or similar
  • Rapid prototype development skills
  • Strong debugging skills
  • Strong experience in digital, analog, and signal conditioning designs
  • Extensive knowledge in integrated systems technologies
  • Ability to develop modeling tests for power or computing systems
  • Experience with systems and circuit board grounding architectures and best practices
  • Self-starter with strong leadership skills
  • Good communication and technical writing skills
  • B.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing spacecraft electronics systems for a commercial unmanned spacecraft or similar
  • Experience in developing electronics computing systems for robotic applications or similar
  • Experience in developing electronics computing systems for military applications or similar
  • Experience in testing custom electronics systems in thermal vacuum and EMI chambers
  • Knowledge of space environmental and radiation testing
  • Experience in setting up lab environments with test equipment to support tests of electronics systems
  • Capable of programming embedded systems such as microcontrollers and microcomputers
  • Experience with of NASA-STD 4001 and NASA-STD 4003 or similar
  • Experience with testing for MIL-STD 461 or similar
  • Capable of programming FPGAs
  • Knowledgeable of Range Safety and Ground Safety electronics compliance
  • M.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in electronics hardware development
