We are looking for an Optics and Opto-Electronics Engineer on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) for their location in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, to join their Optics Section.

The work of the section covers optical system design, engineering and verification, including:

  • Optical system definition, design and engineering;
  • Optical performance evaluation and analysis;
  • Optical component technology including micro-optics, fibers and integrated optics;
  • Spectro-radiometric imagers for visible and infrared radiation;
  • Laser systems and applications (optical communication, lidars for remote sensing, metrology);
  • Interferometry and optical aperture synthesis;
  • Illumination, visualization and display.
  • As part of its mandate, the section operates an Optics Laboratory Unit for optical component and system verification.

Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe and not by ESA.

The successful candidate will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • Performance analysis of optical payload;
  • Straylight analysis of complex optical systems;
  • Conceptual design of optical systems, as telescopes, spectrometers;
  • Translation of optical payload requirements into optical specifications;
  • Definition of optical performance validation and calibration plan;
  • Analysis of test results;
  • Follow on of technology development high precision optical components.
  • Day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Optics Laboratory Unit comprising:
  • General maintenance and servicing of optical, electrooptical and electronics measurement equipment and instrumentation in order to assure that the relevant equipment is in an operational state;
  • General operation and maintenance of the Optics Laboratory cleanroom;
  • Procurement of laboratory materials, chemicals and consumables;
  • Contribution to the identification, selection and specification of new equipment;
  • Installation and maintenance of computer software and hardware for measurement data acquisition and analysis;
  • Stock and equipment inventory tracking;
  • Logging of all laboratory activities;
  • Implementation of safety rules;
  • Planning, setting-up and execution of experiments and measurements of optical and opto-electronics systems, devices and components;
  • Provision of expert advice on optical verification methods and optical material issues in support to projects and technology R&D;
  • Analysis, evaluation, reporting and interpretation of optical measurement data and results.

Job requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering with experience in Optical Design, or equivalent qualification;
  • Minimum 4 years of project and/or industrial experience in the design, and analysis of optical instrumentation;
  • Solid experience in precision optical measurements at system, sub-assembly and component level;
  • Good command of at least one of the following S/W packages: Matlab, IDL, Mathematica.
  • Experience with Zeemax and /or Code V;
  • Experience in testing of various types of Optics is a desirable asset;
  • Knowledge of ASAP is an asset;
  • Very good analytical skills;
  • Good technical judgement and solid communications skills (verbal and in writing);
  • Experience in space project work;
  • Proactive attitude to solving problems and an interest for innovative technologies;
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken).
