Ground Software Architect – Space Mobility

As a Ground Software Architect, you will lead the build, test and integrate the software required for the Space Mobility Mission Operations Center used to fly on-orbit vehicles. You will also be overseeing a team of Ground Software Engineers. You will be responsible for leading the team tasked with developing mission operation software responsible for command and control, mission planning and flight dynamics of an autonomous space vehicle. This includes defining architectures and requirements, coordination of team activities, and leadership of development and verification planning. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration, and your dedicated commitment and detailed attention will further the cause of safe and repeatable spaceflight.

This position reports to the Software Engineering Section in Blue Origin’s Space Systems Development business unit.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, test, verify and deploy mission operations, safety-critical software systems, ensuring the success of Blue Origin’s space missions.
  • Guide the development and implementation of mission operation software and ground system infrastructure.
  • Perform trade studies to determine whether to develop software tools in-house, subcontract work to develop tools, or adapt or purchase existing software to perform a particular function.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers representing flight vehicle systems, mission control infrastructure, and customers to define software requirements, architectures, and designs.
  • Coordinate with mission control infrastructure and mission system engineers to plan, develop, and lead system verification and qualification.
  • Produce documentation for software architecture, design, verification plans, user manual and training material.
  • Support mission control software operations responsibilities (maintenance, flaw correction, improvements) during operator training; ground data system verification, validation and certification; spacecraft integration; and flight.
  • Develop and integrate software components, including unit-level and system-level tests.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or higher degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of software development experience including 5+ years of technical management and production software development.
  • Proven software development skills in C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience in software build automation, continuous integration, configuration management, verification, and deployment.
  • Experience with Agile software development processes.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of diversity and inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • Experience designing and developing software for space flight operations.
  • Operational experience in safety-critical operational domains.
  • Experience working with controls software written in C/C++/Simulink.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and Cloud Technologies
  • Experience developing mission and activity planning and scheduling and timeline display for space missions
  • Experience with communications protocols for space applications (e.g. CCSDS, DDS, etc.)
  • Experience with software development in compliance with mission and safety-critical standards, such as DO-178 or NPR 7150.2.
  • Experience with Guidance, Navigation and Control software integration in an embedded system, and familiarity with flight sensors and actuators.
  • Experience with spacecraft subsystems and associated subsystem software.
