Senior Structural Loads Engineer
Company Details
We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.
As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers, you will support the development and qualification of new rocket engines and thrusters for various spaceflight systems. You will impact these systems by providing high quality engineering support by developing and anchoring system and component loads. You will need to be proficient at cross-discipline interactions to ensure proper loads model assumptions to ensure correct generation of desired outputs. You will need to be excellent at the use of finite element models to generate component and system loads. You will need to be skilled at finite element model reduction techniques. You will need to be skilled at development of forcing functions from test and historical data.
Day to day activities will include prediction of loads throughout propulsion systems due to low frequency and static system loads, validation of loads and forcing functions using test data, and generation of forcing functions from development tests. Much of this work will be done with Finite Element Models using NASTRAN and MATLAB. You will also work closely with a variety of systems to understand our test data and provide input into test plans so that you get the data you need. Finally, you will contribute to our loads and dynamics process and tool development.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical, aerospace or civil engineering
- 8+ years of experience in the prediction/validation of low frequency (<100hz) structural dynamics and loads
- Finite Element Modeling experience
- NASTRAN and MATLAB proficiency
- Ability to solve a variety of static and dynamic structural problems using physics-based analytical methods (hand calculations, in-house tools, and 3rd party commercial analytical tools)
- Spacecraft and launch vehicle loads experience
- Experience with the following commercial software tools: HYPERMESH, ANSYS, NASTRAN DMAP, ATA’s iMAT (MATLAB Toolbox), PYTHON, FORTRAN
- Experience with time domain, frequency domain, and random vibration statistical analysis
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification.
