Boeing Global Services Structural Repair Team are looking for a multi-skilled Structural Design Engineer to develop, integrate and document structural design requirements of large aircraft. To demonstrate compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, customer requirements and procedures defined in the company’s Design Organization Handbook (DOH).

The Role:

Reporting to the Structural Repair Engineering Manager and working with the global engineering services team, across multiple time-zones, in order to identify requirements and their associated solutions for active and upcoming projects.

Job Description:

The design engineer bears overall responsibility for developing safe, compliant, and reliable structure at the lowest cost and weight that meets all established design criteria. Designs must be completed within a committed time period, and management may emphasize priorities (airplane performance vs. cost vs. schedule). The design engineer accomplishes this task by researching existing designs and by considering lessons learned before embarking on new design concepts. The design engineer also considers the potential for reuse of existing designs to increase commonality. The design engineer collects requirements and objectives and coordinates with other stakeholders and support groups. The design engineer then synthesizes and communicates one or more design solutions that seek to meet all the requirements and as many of the objectives as possible.

Responsibilities:

Understands and develops engineering design solutions with the use of CAD for modifications to aircraft structures:

  • Proficient in the aircraft structures Core Design Competencies (CDC)
  • Incorporates airplane knowledge and service history.
  • Integrates requirements.
  • Perform initial sizing.
  • Develop joints and select fasteners.
  • Apply appropriate materials and processes.
  • Design for manufacturing.
  • Create and develop designs.
  • Produce technical definition.
  • Communicate, administers, and leads.
  • Proficient in Product Development
  • Understanding of Airplane configuration.
  • Concept design – major joints or architectures.
  • Preliminary design – assembly and installations.
  • Approval and final layouts.
  • Drawing and dataset releases.
  • Tools and Processes
  • Understanding of project management
  • Task or commodity level.
  • Major commodity or section level.
  • Attend multiple instructor-led training courses for hard and soft skills improvement.

In addition, responsibilities include assisting the group or team manager with project management by developing detail schedules, monitoring, reporting, and supporting the timely and efficient project execution of the statement of work. Stakeholders review the draft design, and the design engineer incorporates additional requirements and improvements to achieve an integrated, efficient design.  Design engineer continually pursues knowledge and builds skills that are referred to as design competencies.

Essential Skills/ Qualifications:

BEng Mechanical Engineering (or similar) with ideally a minimum 4 years of mechanical/structural design engineering industrial experience

Preferred Skills/Experience:

Current or recent employment within the aerospace industry specifically working with structural repairs

  • CATIA V5 and/or AutoCAD industrial experience
  • Knowledge and experience of primary and secondary aircraft structures
  • Working knowledge of sheet metal forming/fabrication/machining
  • Working knowledge of aircraft material and fastener selection, hole size types, sealants & finishing
  • A high level of attention to detail and professional integrity
  • Ability to work on multiple programs with varying level of requirements efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and show flexibility to changing situations / demands
  • A proven track record of design engineering leadership skills
