Today, this US-owned company with headquarters in New York City and operations in the Netherlands, Sweden and Luxembourg builds high performance spacecraft propulsion systems, avionics, attitude orbit control systems, microgravity workspaces, and is developing the highly maneuverable Explorer spacecraft for beyond LEO missions.

We are looking for a Senior Design and Production Engineer to join Bradford Engineering B.V, a Bradford Space subsidiary and a Netherlands base supplier of Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS), Propulsion, Avionics and Thermal solutions for spacecraft.

The Senior Design & Production Engineer is responsible for creating all necessary drawings, 2D/3D models and production documentation (parts list, layouts, schematics, tooling, …) from a conceptual idea to a full design. As a result, he/she is not only involved in the design process but also partly
responsible for optimizing Bradford’s processes and production methods to be available and adequate.

The main objective of this position is to contribute to:

  • Visualizing ideas and examining the principles that are the basis after which designs and prototypes can be developed
  • Create the final production package after an iterative process of drawings, investigations to develop, design, manufacture and test our products and processes
  • Ensuring that production processes and tooling are defined and developed before the design/product is transferred to production
  • Design to manufacture and to cost

Key responsibilities:

The assigned main tasks are, but not limited to:

  • Interact with project teams on:
    • Discussing concepts and translate conceptual drawings in design drawings
    • Create detailed part and product drawings 3D and 2D
    • Translate the product design into a manufacturing and assembly file
  • Prepare complete designs, often complex, with minimal technical inputs by comprehending the total task and planning out the detail requirements.
  • Realize designs according statements of work
  • Create the article numbers in the ERP system
  • Prepare complex redesigns and repackaging of existing products through proper component and hardware sizing, selection, etc.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to sizing, performance, tolerance and assembly
  • Select components & materials and define processes
  • Design (test) tooling and fixtures when required
  • Assure accuracy of design through carefully checking of his own and work of others
  • Coordinate with Production
    • To develop effective production control configurations (kit structure, alternate parts, revision control, etc.)
    • Creating assembly procedure

Essential skills

  • Five years or more mechanical design experience
  • The competences required for this function are a BSc level education in the fields of Mechanical or (Aero)space Engineering
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent by experience
  • Proficiency in (technical) Dutch & English
  • The following key knowledge points are of interest
    • Manufacturing and assembly processes
    • AIT Engineering
    • Detailed know how of production and industrialization processes
    • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques
  • Experience in translating a (product) design into a manufacturing and assembly file
  • Experience with a 3D modeling software tool

Strongly valued/desired skills

  • Experience in the spaceflight industry, preferably in a SME environment
  • Experience in technical document writing (short and to the point)
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor
