Research conducted within CSIRO’s Oceans & Atmosphere (O&A) Business Unit brings together capability in the observation of trace gases, aerosols and chemical processes of the atmosphere, and the transport and chemical modelling required to interpret these data. This is performed at global to regional and urban scales, and timescales from minutes to millennia. This provides critical scientific information and forecasts about key aspects of the global and Australia’s atmosphere, including both air quality and greenhouse gas emissions.

We are seeking an experienced Air Quality Senior Research Scientist to join the Atmospheric Composition and Chemistry Group in CSIRO’s Climate Science Centre. You will be part of a team of leading researchers in atmospheric chemistry observations and modelling. In this exciting role, you will lead the team’s portfolio of air quality research projects and will bring together expertise in observations, modelling, and exposure and health impact assessment methodologies. Collaborating with a range of stakeholders, you will drive the delivery of high quality science in support of national benefit.

Your duties will include:

  • Developing, leading and managing air quality research projects for impact within a portfolio of work and contributing to strategic planning.
  • Managing research across observations, modelling, and exposure and health impact assessment methodologies.
  • Undertaking fieldwork related to air quality research.
  • Contributing to ethics application and privacy impact assessments
  • Working with a range of stakeholders including Government, industry and community to develop externally funded project opportunities.

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as environmental science, atmospheric science or air quality science coupled with significant industry or research experience in air quality research.
  • Sound knowledge and experience with air quality observation and modelling techniques and methodologies for air pollution exposure and health impact assessments.
  • Experience developing, leading and managing projects for impact.
  • A history of engaging with external stakeholders including government, industry and community in the development and delivery of air quality projects, products, tools and services.
  • Good communication skills including:A publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
  • The ability to represent the research effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences
  • A history of undertaking original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • To be willing and able to travel and undertake fieldwork as required.
