Simulation Engineer

Company Details

Dawn Aerospace was founded to redefine near-space transportation. Redefine how we deliver assets to space, position satellites on orbit, and return things down to Earth to enable the vibrant and circular space economy of the future. To do this, we build scalable, accessible, and sustainable spaceflight technologies – technologies that are sustainable for not just the foreseeable future, but the unforeseeable future.

Description

For our future two-stage-to-orbit launcher based on a spaceplane, we are looking for a Simulations Engineer to aid us with the multi-disciplinary design of this system.

Dawn Aerospace is an exciting, fast-growing company in the aerospace industry developing world-leading space technology. We have a distributed Spaceplane department with engineering teams in New-Zealand and the Netherlands. This is a fantastic opportunity to join our System Team in Delft, NL.

In this role, you will be responsible for developing, running, and maintaining 3DOF and 6DOF simulators for various purposes. Furthermore, you will provide advice regarding system design and guidance, navigation & control (GNC) design. An important aspect is the communication with the flight and ground software development teams in New-Zealand, which will require flexible hours from time to time in both mornings and evenings for meetings.

Your knowledge of flight-related domains and your ability to apply this to simulators will bring great value in realising Dawn’s ambition, where you will get the unique opportunity to work on both suborbital and orbital vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Development of 3DOF and 6DOF simulators including requirements management, design, implementation, and verification for designing the launcher.
  • Performing mission analyses and trajectory optimisations as part of the system team.
  • Support other teams with simulator development.
  • Writing technical reports.
  • Interfacing with other spaceplane teams.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience with developing flight simulators or similar.
  • A degree in aerospace engineering or similar.
  • Ability to easily switch between levels of aggregation, from mission level to implementation of control laws.
  • Experience in working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, and C/C++.
  • Knowledge of flight dynamics for rockets.
  • Understanding of guidance, navigation & control methods.
  • Experience in the application of systems engineering methods like UML.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of flight dynamics for aircraft.
  • Familiarity with space system design standards and quality management systems.
  • Experience in systems engineering tools in a space system design context.
  • Working in a geographically widespread team.
  • Git workflow best practices.
  • Knowledge of optimisation methods for vehicle sizing and trajectory definition.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively and appropriately balancing performance, resource use, risk, cost, and schedule.
