Manufacture of Mechanical Components, Assemblies and Systems for Scientific Test Equipment

Company Details

DLR Institute of Space Systems in Bremen designs and analyses future spacecraft and space missions (launchers, orbital and exploration systems, and satellites), and assesses them with regard to their technical performance and cost. It applies state-of-the-art methods of multi-disciplinary engineering in system design and analysis

Industrial mechanic, mechatronic engineer or similar

Your mission:

The Institute for Atmospheric Physics researches the physics and chemistry of the global atmosphere from the bottom to the top of the middle atmosphere at a height of about 120 km. The institute answers questions relevant to DLR related to the atmosphere in the HGF programs Aviation, Space, Transport and Energy. For this purpose, the institute covers the entire spectrum of methods from sensor development, observations on different spatial scales (local to global), analysis, theory building and numerical modeling, including the ability to predict. With the help of these competencies, the institute works on both basic and application-related questions. Building on this, the institute is a competent contact for all questions that are relevant to the atmosphere for society and politics.

As part of this research field, you will take over the manufacture of mechanical components, assemblies and systems for scientific test equipment. Your tasks include:

  • Machining and non-machining material processing of workpieces made of metal and plastic in the context of mechanical production for the construction and integration of components for measuring systems using the existing tools and machines in the institute’s own workshop
  • Mechanical production, construction and integration of components for measuring systems
  • Maintenance and further development of assemblies of existing and newly developed measuring arrangements to adapt to new systems or mission requirements for ground or aircraft-based applications
  • Support in the design and construction as well as in the repair of mechanical components for measuring equipment according to rough specifications by the colleagues
  • Creation of technical documentation
  • Supervision of the machine park, material procurement and material storage as well as technical matters of the institute

DLR is known for its unique research infrastructure with exciting topics that are highly relevant for science, society and politics. It also offers its employees extensive qualification opportunities and a family-friendly environment with flexible working time models.

Your qualification:

  • Completed training to become an industrial mechanic or a comparable field of training (cutting machine operator, precision mechanic, tool mechanic, specialist for metal technology, technical model maker, manufacturing mechanic, mechatronic engineer)
  • Completed further training to become a state-certified technician
  • Several years experience
  • Experience in using CAD software (Catia)
  • Manual skills and knowledge of manufacturing processes
  • Good knowledge and skills in the manual and mechanical production of workpieces also using CNC machines
  • Extensive knowledge and skills in the various joining and joining techniques
  • Physical ability to upgrade and dismantle the systems as well as for use in soil measurement campaigns and measurement flights, sometimes under difficult conditions
  • Very good knowledge of German (spoken and written)
  • Several years of experience in metal or plastic processing
  • Experience with aircraft installations and related documentation
  • Hands-on mentality and teamwork with social skills
  • Independent way of working
  • Application knowledge of MS Office, e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and quality management
  • Willingness to use for measurement campaigns in Germany and abroad, also for several weeks
  • Ability to fly in research aircraft
  • Willingness to qualify in the DLR development company (EB) as a construction inspector
  • Good knowledge of English (spoken and written)
  • Drivers licence class B
