DEIMOS is selecting one senior engineer to be integrated in the GNC/AOCS Competence Centre of the Flight Systems Business Unit at DEIMOS Space UK, to support new growth areas in Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC), and in Attitude and Orbit Control Systems (AOCS).

The chosen candidate will be in charge of technically managing projects of different sizes, mentoring junior engineers, and designing, developing, verifying and validating GNC/AOCS subsystems. The applications envisaged are state of the art space projects such as launch vehicles, re-entry vehicles and satellites.

This role is offering a unique opportunity to be involved in fast timescale space projects, with significant opportunities for personal growth in term of technical expertise and project management. The selected candidate will also be exposed to a wide range of space applications including atmospheric flight, Image Analysis and Embedded SW projects.

As a member of the GNC/AOCS Competence Centre, the engineer will work in a team of other highly skilled engineers across Europe (Portugal, Spain, UK, Romania). The work of the GNC/AOCS Competence Centre is oriented to the design, development, specification, and validation of autonomous systems, including GNC and AOCS systems, for a broad range of aerospace and aeronautical platforms. As a matter of reference, DEIMOS’ activities cover:

  • Satellite formation flying, rendezvous, in-orbit servicing (IOS) and active
    debris removal (ADR)
  • Entry, descent, and landing on planets (Earth, Mars) & natural satellites
  • Launch vehicles
  • Earth observation, upstream (flight segment) and downstream
  • Interplanetary exploration and navigation
  • Unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs, UGVs)
  • System and mission design

Main Duties:

The following types of responsibilities are envisioned:

  • Technical and project management
  • Mentoring of junior engineers
  • Specification, design, implementation, and validation of GNC/AOCS subsystems, at the different phases of a mission
  • Specification and procurement of sensors and actuators for GNC/AOCS
  • Specification, design, implementation, and validation of GNC/AOCS algorithms, to be applied to satellites, launchers, and re-entry vehicles, among others
  • Simulator design, implementation and testing
  • Identification of new opportunities and support to business development



  • A recognized engineering degree (Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Electronic) or a related degree (e.g., Physics, Maths)


  • Postgraduate studies (MSc or PhD) with a focus on aeronautical / aerospace engineering and providing a solid background in at least two of the following:
  • Orbital mechanics
  • Classical and Multivariable robust control techniques
  • Navigation techniques
  • Flight operations
  • Atmospheric flight dynamics

Professional Experience:


  • Engineer with at least 6 years of experience in the practical application of the domains relevant to the post (relevant MSc & PhD studies would also be considered).
  • The position will be tailored to the level of experience and additional industrial experience would be viewed very positively.

Technical Requirements:


  • Solid theoretical background in GNC/AOCS, including a strong background in control and simulation of dynamic systems
  • Practical experience in aeronautical/aerospace GNC/AOCS solutions (experience in ESA/European programmes is welcome)
  • Capacity to understand new concepts and apply them to engineering problems
  • Good programming skills
  • Experience with Matlab and Simulink
  • Demonstrated capability to manage projects
  • Demonstrated capability to mentor junior staff
  • Demonstrated capability to lead the technical solution to a complex engineering problem


  • Experience in ESA/European programmes in all phases (0/A to D/E/F)
  • Experience on atmospheric flight programmes, including flight testing and post-flight analysis
  • Experience in applied multivariable robust control
  • Experience with Python and C
  • Experience in flight software implementation of algorithms

Language Skills:

  • Good level of English, spoken and written
