Archangel Imaging is a startup developing distributed intelligence and advanced unmanned camera systems. We have worked on World Record projects and have developed unique machine vision payloads including edge AI devices featured at BT Augmented Intelligence 2018 (winner), Dubai’s Robotics for Good award in 2017 (finalist) and at Innovate 2017 exhibition.

Our mission is to help organisations gain and manage easily machine vision capability on edge devices deployed in remote areas, such as in automated search and rescue operations, sea crime monitoring and environmental protection missions. Our products combine cutting-edge machine learning with specialist cameras, advanced communication terminals and different levels of swarm intelligence to meet this challenge.

Role description

We are looking for an embedded software engineer with experience delivering commercial embedded devices. Such devices will include our smart cameras and wireless communications devices, capable of being deployed in remote places.

Strong experience with embedded software on various technologies is required, exposure to hardware (mechanics, electronics) is beneficial. The successful candidate will own the software/firmware development for all our devices. Working with the devices Tech Lead and the computer vision engineers to deliver low power edge-AI and wireless comms devices.

The ideal candidate will be very hands on, capable of prototyping, design, development and testing. They will also need to understand or learn how deep learning inference is implemented on embedded devices.

Experience with IoT, wireless technology, computer vision and machine learning platforms would be highly beneficial.

International travel required.

Likely >3 trips/year to support pilots, visit suppliers, visit customers etc.

Role responsibilities

  • Produce working software for our small volume, fully functioning edge-compute devices
  • Develop and integrate software/firmware in these areas:
  • drivers
  • boot logic
  • board bring up / testing
  • control / state machines / interfaces
  • deep learning inference
  • multiple cameras
  • wireless IoT comms
  • battery power monitoring
  • renewable energy charging
  • GPS/GNSS positioning
  • Liaise with other development teams to integrate various components
  • Support the other development teams with rapid prototyping
  • testing of software and devices, e.g. range testing radios, measuring solar charging efficiency or deep learning model accuracy

Interested applicants may also join first as a fixed-term consultant although we prefer to find a good permanent match.


Essential skills/ experience:

  • A minimum of a Masters degree in a computer science related subject​
  • Experience delivering functioning commercial embedded software
  • Excellent skills with embedded software development on low power CPUs and microcontrollers/MCUs
  • Excellent Python, C++, C skills
  • Strong logical and mathematical skills
  • Strong prototyping and problem solving skills​
  • Strong Linux development skills
  • Strong software design and development experience, including OO design
  • Experience with various interface technologies (device drivers, hardware drivers, serial, GPIO, interrupts etc.)
  • Working understanding of modern embedded wireless systems
  • Working understanding of computer vision devices
  • Good communications skills
  • Understanding of low power electronic engineering​ for embedded devices.
  • Awareness of hardware limitations

Desirable skills/ experience:

  • Strong skills working with camera sensors, modules and interfaces
  • Strong skills with wireless technologies and standards (LoRa, Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, Bluetooth etc.)
  • Good skills in embedded software optimization​
  • Experience using IoT technologies in a commercial project
  • Drone / UAS design/development experience
  • Customer engagement experience
  • RTOS selection
  • Machine learning and computer vision​ solutions
  • Good skills in power profiling and power optimization​

Our core team is currently based in Harwell Space Campus, with longer-term plans to move our office base to central Oxford/ London. Regular remote work is possible for qualified candidates. Depending on the projects, there will also be overseas travel.
