Description

Who are you?

As a Software Systems Engineer, you will have experience in specifying, developing, integrating and verifying software as part of complex systems. You will have strong technical knowledge and although Space sector experience is desirable, you do not need have prior knowledge of Spacecraft Systems. However, you will need to be comfortable working with other technical specialists to deliver the required software. You will either have a systems engineering background with an exposure to software, or be a software engineer who has interacted with systems engineers to deliver complex systems.

You will be an enthusiastic, self-starting individual who is happy to take responsibility for a range of activities from design and development to testing of software. You will be willing to work as part of a team, flex your priorities to support others where necessary and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment.

What will you be doing here?

As In-Space takes on increasingly complex projects, we are looking for engineers who can bridge the gap between software engineering and systems engineering. As software is an integral part of spacecraft and ground segment functionality, the specification and validation of functionality is critical to successful operations. As a successful candidate, you will be involved in having a detailed understanding of the software capabilities of our spacecraft and will be responsible for writing high-level systems requirements that can be allocated to software functions, breaking these down into low-level requirements, then be responsible for validating requirements over the development lifecycle of the mission.

The role requires experience in understanding software architecture and its relation to requirements or specifications, knowing the limits of requirements and how to evaluate gaps. An understanding of software design and an ability to write and test code will be essential in succeeding in this role.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Understanding spacecraft and ground segment software and system architectures
  • Creating work packages that will cover the software effort needed to deliver the mission
  • Creating system-level and low-level software requirements based on inputs from customers, industry regulations and engineers
  • Reviewing requirements from completeness and correctness perspectives
  • Writing tests that trace to requirements and documenting the resources needed
  • Evaluating test reports to validate mission and software requirements
  • Improving the quality of ISM software through contributions to requirement, testing and verification guidelines and procedures

You should have demonstrable experience in the following areas:

  • Working with systems requirements to improve the quality of requirements, and to derive software requirements or technical specifications
  • Writing code in at least one commonly used programming language (e.g., C, Java or Python) to meet existing requirements
  • Low-level software unit and functional testing to verify software specifications
  • High-level system testing to validate system functionality
  • Usage of requirements and testing trace matrices to understand gaps in system specifications

You will also have:

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • An enthusiastic and creative approach
  • An analytical and flexible approach to problem solving

Additionally, any of the following skills will be beneficial in the role:

  • An understanding of testing frameworks such as Robot
  • Knowledge and use of Requirements tools such as DOORS or Jama Connect
  • Previous experience with Test-Driven Development or Behaviour-Driven Design
