Prime Purpose

  • Intellian is investing in a new L-Band Centre of Excellence in the UK. As part of the expansion, we are looking for experienced engineers to join our world-class team. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design aspects of products, working closely alongside other engineers to support development programs.
  • You will develop 3D models, technical drawings and design documentation for satcom antenna terminals and accessories, and be responsible for maintaining these from concept development to mass production. You will contribute to the development of small form factor, highly optimised and tightly integrated products while maintaining suitable DFx. You will provide expertise and guidance to other members of the team, including hardware engineers and antenna designers, to support the development of highly integrated products. You will be comfortable communicating with and managing suppliers and vendors based both in the UK and internationally.


  • Develop concepts, layouts and detailed designs for compact, highly integrated products
  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies using Solidworks that meet the specified requirements
  • Incorporate the principals of Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly, Design for Cost into your designs and drawings
  • Create technical drawings and manufacturing data packs in accordance with recognised standards such as ASME Y14.100 and Y14.5
  • Manage and maintain design data with standard best-practice configuration management procedures
  • Manage suppliers and vendors for the procurement and manufacturing of com
  • Develop and document suitable processes and procedures within your area
  • Complete thermal analysis using suitable tools and techniques and create designs that effectively manage the thermal loading of the products
  • Analyze designs to ensure compliance with environmental requirements (shock, vibration, temperature, salt spray etc)
  • Be “hands-on” with the evaluation and testing of prototypes and engineering samples
  • Manage design software and associated tools (eg PDM software)
  • Support the development of the R&D test & prototyping lab within the office
  • Provide training and technical support as required to other members.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years experience in a similar role
  • Experience using CAD software to generate 3D models of components of assemblies and technical drawing packs
  • Experience working with hardware engineers on the design and integration of PCBs
  • Experience with common techniques and analysis methods for effective thermal management of electronics
  • Experience with configuration management (PDM/PLM)
  • Understanding of manufacturing methods suitable for prototyping, low and high volume production (eg 3D printing, machining, etching, injection moulding etc)
  • Experience and desire to use common hand tools for assembling, measuring and testing prototypes and engineering samples
  • Experience managing procurement and manufacturing of components with suppliers and vendors

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 4+ years experience with integrating electronics into consumer or enterprise products for use in harsh environments
  • Strong Solidworks skills
  • Experience with CAD tool administration
  • Experience using structural analysis tools (FEA)
  • Practical knowledge and experience taking designs from concept and prototype through to mass production
  • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Understanding of common environmental standards and regulatory requirements applicable to enterprise and consumer products

Personal Qualities:

  • You should have strong communication skills and be comfortable communicating your ideas and opinions with engineers, vendors and non-technical stakeholders
  • You should be comfortable working on multiple concurrent projects and on R&D programs that can involve significant uncertainty and change direction often
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills
  • Ability to pay close attention to the details while keeping an eye on the big picture


  • Bachelor’s or Masters’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar discipline
