Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

Iridium is seeking an experienced Senior Lab Engineer to support the Iridium Communications System (ICS) in Chandler, Arizona. The Lab Engineer will work amongst a team of engineers to provide the design, development, maintenance, repair, and operation of the Iridium Technical Support Center (TSC) engineering labs.

Essential Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Monitor and assess lab state and perform problem mitigation independently or at the direction of program management
  • Design, document, implement, calibrate, repair, and maintain the Radio Frequency (RF) test systems infrastructure
  • Actively participate in the setup, calibration, technical operation, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of lab equipment and simulator subsystems
  • Document changes made to the labs due to enhancement, repair, or configuration change
  • Assist in maintaining the network infrastructure of the labs’ general computing infrastructure and maintain the test systems computing infrastructure
  • Will develop RF designs and help fabricate equipment for the TSC engineering labs
  • Will verify RF systems are operating safely; document and train lab personnel and the Iridium program on safe RF operations
  • Perform electrical circuit and board design, work with vendors to fabricate boards, and cable connectors, perform minor repairs to existing electrical circuit boards, and integrate electrical circuits and wire tape telecom blocks, into the TSC lab test systems
  • Perform circuit board design and build
  • Perform AC/DC circuit maintenance
  • Work collaboratively with software, hardware, test, and system development engineers
  • Research, design, document, and implement hardware upgrades of lab infrastructure and test systems
  • Integrate, maintain and operate lab hardware and software systems
  • Assist in the mitigation of risks and/issues identified
  • Collaborate with team members across various functional disciplines to ensure high product quality and establish and maintain good working relationships

Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to integrate, maintain and verify proper operation of Iridium Subscriber Equipment with lab test systems
  • Must have strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, issues, impacts, and corrective actions
  • Advanced technical and problem-solving skills in dealing with complex issues and the ability to transfer findings into report and presentation formats
  • Ability to exercise wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments
  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision
  • Must be results-driven with a strong sense of ownership
  • Must be proficient with the Microsoft Windows and Office product suite
  • Able to work well both independently and in team structures
  • Ability to communicate clearly with team members and management

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb a 20-foot ladder and occasionally work on the roof of a building
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field experience
  • 5+ years experience in a Lab Engineering role required
  • The following skills and abilities are required:
    • Experience maintaining MS Windows, UNIX, and Linux computer systems is required
    • Demonstrated systems troubleshooting experience
    • Demonstrated systems integration experience
    • Previous experience creating custom cables (i.e., RJ45, DB15 or other DB connectors, RF cables, electrical, fiber, antenna, etc.)
    • Previous experience using lab equipment including, but not limited to, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, signal generators, state machine driven traffic simulators, protocol analyzers, Telecommunication T1/E1 Analyzer, and power meters
  • Any of the following skills and abilities are highly desired:
    • Linux operating systems knowledge
    • Knowledge of software programming in C/C++, C#, shell programming, Python, Bash, LabView, PERL and/or TCL
    • Familiarity with single-board computers (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, PIC platform)
    • Soldering skills
    • Ability to design and update microprocessor firmware
    • Familiarity with the use and application of timing sources
    • Familiarity with telecommunications equipment, physical checkout of E1, Layer-1 test set
  • Must be able to travel up to 15 days annually
  • Must be able to occasionally be on-call to support operational issues
  • Due to ITAR/EAR restrictions, must be a US Citizen
