Flight Analyst Performance Engineer

  • Interface regularly with Flight Physics teams (aerodynamics, controllability, control laws, loads), as well as Airframe, Powertrain, and other groups affected by performance and aerodynamics.
  • Additional responsibilities may include FAA and/or EASA interaction and coordination.
  • Complete analysis, design, and testing tasks pertaining to aerodynamics, performance, and handling qualities of vehicle designs at different stages of development and certification.
  • Conduct propeller and mission performance calculations and the underlying engineering analyses that provide inputs to aircraft-level calculations related to product requirements.
  • Evaluate component test and flight test data, using empirical data to improve analytical predictions and modeling and validate performance and controllability estimates.
  • Support mission, field performance, and cruise performance analysis requests from the Air Vehicle, Flight Physics, and Certification teams.
  • Collaborate with the broader engineering team to conduct multidisciplinary trade studies to guide design decisions relating to aircraft performance and controllability.
  • Support requirement verification activities in various engineering subject areas.
  • Support test procedure development and test execution for field and flight performance validation.
  • Develop engineering tools to complete analysis tasks associated with aircraft development and certification.


  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (aerospace engineering preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of and/or experience with FAA Part 23 and/or Part 27 Subpart B certification regulations and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience working with or generating aerodynamic data related to aircraft lift, drag, and controllability using various analytical or empirical methods
  • Experience with and/or fundamental knowledge of computational fluid dynamics
  • Experience with and/or fundamental knowledge of rotorcraft or fixed-wing performance analysis techniques that builds on applicable educational experience
  • Knowledge of, and/or exposure to, FAA Subpart B regulations and compliance procedures for Part 23, 25, 27 and/or 29 aircraft/rotorcraft, as well as Part 91 regulations
  • Excellent verbal and technical writing skills in the English language
  • Ability to complete tasks pertaining to aerodynamics, performance, handling qualities with minimal supervision
  • Strong or demonstrated skills in MATLAB and/or other scientific programming languages (Python, C, etc.)
  • Collaborates effectively between multidisciplinary teams and enjoys working in a dynamic environment
  • Self-sufficient and self-starter, and maintains a sense of urgency in communications and actions
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs products
  • Must be able to travel 30% to support testing


  • Full-time on-site support in Santa Cruz, CA offices
  • At least one year of aerospace industry experience in flight performance and/or handling qualities/controllability, and/or a graduate degree in aerospace engineering
  • Experience with supporting flight testing in any category of aircraft
  • Experience with FAA Subpart B regulations and compliance procedures for Part 23, 25, 27 and/or 29 aircraft/rotorcraft, as well as Part 91 regulations
  • Experience with development and approval of Aircraft Flight Manuals (AFM) and Pilot Operating
  • Handbooks (POH) and the performance data therein
  • Experience or fundamental knowledge of fly-by-wire flight control systems and control laws
  • Greater experience than above requirements will be considered
