Kepler is on a Mission to bring the internet to space. Incorporated in 2015, Kepler’s guiding star is to enable the space economy through the creation of a communication network in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that will provide connectivity services to other space missions, be they on orbit in LEO, MEO, GEO, or beyond.  With an expanding base of early customers and our first 19 satellites in orbit, Kepler is continuing to grow and expand its most important asset – the Team! Based out of our HQ in Toronto and with an office in the UK and a newly formed office in the US we are building towards a truly global company delivering a product for the whole world.

Kepler Communications is seeking a dynamic and experienced Optical Engineer. This role would provide engineering leadership on our flagship Aether Program bringing the internet to Space.  The selected person will be an energetic and strong communicator that will help guide the administrative and operational aspects of ongoing projects within the Aether business area.   • Managing execution of all Optical Engineering and responsible for complex coordination across multiple Kepler engineering areas, including Systems Engineering, Mechanical Design, Electrical
  • Design, Test Design, Software Engineering and Technical Leadership
  • Interfacing with the Aether Program Leadership Team
  • Preparing briefings as well as presenting and leading technical meetings for internal and external stakeholders / customers
  • Maintain optical tech roadmap, assess/maintain knowledge of the current capability of the industry, and perform make-buy trades on a system by system basis in support of Kepler’s mission
  • Link Optical strategy to action with respect to make/buy qualification of new suppliers and supplier negotiations in order achieve highest performance at best cost and schedule in support of Kepler’s mission


  • Bachelor’s /Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline (Physics, Electrical, Mechanical, etc.)
  • 8+ years of prior relevant experience in multiple Engineering disciplines
  • Ability to travel as needed to manage suppliers, observe acceptance testing at a supplier and perform an acceptance test at Kepler when received. Travel is up to 50% depending on phase of program and job responsibilities and will include international travel
  • Ability to work in a complex systems environment and an understanding of the systems engineering approach to complex design
  • Understanding of optics supply chain and expertise in procurement of optical components, modules, sub-assemblies, and systems
  • Ability to write statements of work, solicit bids, and ensure effective procurement of optical components and devices including; engineering development units, flight items, and test equipment as needed
  • Experience effectively managing technical performance of multiple major suppliers of optics-based laser communications subsystems
  • Experience in transition to production of optical devices
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced and cross-functional engineering development team environment
  • Possess strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to generate and deliver presentations for customers and management

  • Experience in Space industry
  • Ability to establish Kepler’s in house optical department to support Kepler mission of bringing the internet to space
  • Ability to support integration and test of devices in the future as needed
