The IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) department, with its 100 researchers and engineers, focuses on the digital transformation of operations in organizations with traditional environments and digital ecosystems, with the aim of improving their performance and innovation capacity. The common thread throughout ITIS is to develop the most efficient use of big data to ensure the most appropriate decision-making processes.

The department relies on the Data Analytics Platform: a hybrid infrastructure covering the entire range of data analytics activities. The platform is based on three pillars: a high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, a cognitive analytics pillar and an interactive visualization wall (Viswall).


How will you contribute?

  • The successful candidate will be an outstanding internationally recognised researcher in the field of applied computer science/software engineering. The candidate will have a strong track record in establishing and leading collaborative and contract research projects with industry and businesses. In addition to scientific standing, priority will be given to candidate with experience in collaborative and contract research with industry and public sector partners.
  • The candidate will have a proven scientific track record in a relevant sub-domain of software engineering; software design and development, data-intensive systems, trusted critical systems, software product lines, distributed architectures, security & privacy, model-based approaches, resilient software architectures. The candidate will be internationally recognized with experience building teams and acquiring competitive and industrial research funding. The candidate will be familiar with research with industry, with the exploitation of the research and technology, leading to innovation or industrialization.
  • The Chair will be supported by the PEARL programme of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) which aims at recruiting outstanding scientists in strategically important areas to develop and strengthen Luxembourg’s national research priorities. The Chair will enjoy a start-up package for five years with a financial contribution of approximately €4 million excluding overheads.
  • The beneficiary will have an appointment with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg and with the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) enforcing the links between both institutions.

The mission is to:

  • Support academic, research, and engineering staff to promote career development and the nurturing of talent;
  • Build and lead a joint group on trusted critical systems at SnT (research) and LIST (innovation and industrialization);
  • Lead and develop excellent research, innovation and impact at national and international levels;
  • Undertake and publish high-quality research cognizant of relevant metrics for international
  • Reputation and scholarly merit;
  • Establish systematic and structured approach to knowledge transfer through contract research exploiting research platform;
  • Generate research income through applications to major funding bodies;
  • Develop good relationships both internally and external stakeholders;
  • Take responsibility for all aspects of the research strategy, operations and management, including: the delivery of agreed research strategy, objectives, metrics and accomplishments
  • Drive the continued creation of economic value and impact from excellent research outputs and contributing to the exploitation of the research and technology to the benefit of the Luxembourgish economy.

Requirements for a successful candidate are:

  • A PhD in computer science or software engineering
  • An international reputation for excellence in research demonstrated through an outstanding publication record
  • An established record of attracting external funding, such as ERC grants or equivalent, and engagement in knowledge-transfer activities such as with industry
  • A track record in collaborative and contract research projects working with the private sector
  • A broad and relevant international network
  • Strong motivational skills to drive the research agenda within SnT and LIST
  • A confirmed record of accomplishment in leadership and management and experience in building collaborations among disciplines
  • Ability to represent and promote the institutions to public authorities, private organisations, stakeholders and collaborating partners both nationally and on the global-stage
  • Excellent communicative, collaborative and organisational skills
  • Good management skills: she/he will be active, decisive, transparent, charismatic and a good communicator
  • The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in English and either French or German. The University encourages its staff to learn the other language and provides access to language courses to this end.
