LEAD RESEARCHER IN VISUALIZATION AND VISUAL ANALYTICS

Company Details

The VISU group has developed strong expertise in visual analytics for graph/network data, high dimension and mixed data as well as text data for applications like industry 4.0, automotive, health or life sciences. We’d like to further develop our portfolio of activities in these sectors and to grow in complementary application fields in particular finance, smart cities/regions, and edutechs. Our ambition is to imagine generic methodologies, approaches and techniques that can be transferable across application domains.

In the context of the upcoming regulation on Trustworthy AI, we also foresee visualization as a powerful mean to provide explanations of AI models and outcomes. Therefore, the VISU group is developing synergies with the AI-centered groups of the DSA Unit. For instance, the question of biases is present both in AI and in visualization and it should be jointly considered in the Trustworthy AI paradigm.

Visualization is also closely related to Human-Computer Interaction. When it is required, the VISU group is therefore joining its forces with HCI experts of other groups from the DSA unit who are specialized in User experience (UX), Human Factors and Augmented/Mixed Reality (AR/MR).

You should be a recognized researcher in your field with a documented footprint in the scientific community. Your main mission will be to promote RD&I activities and recognition within the Visualization group and the DSA unit by acquiring funding, managing large RD&I projects and maintaining / further developing your profile in the relevant scientific and technological communities.

You will lead the definition, and manage as PI, national and international RD&I projects of high complexity as well as multiannual and/or multidisciplinary RD&I projects.

You will additionally lead and promote the dissemination, valorisation and transfer of RD&I results (patents, licenses, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences) and publish scientific results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals or conferences. Such efforts should be performed in strong collaboration with other members of the VISU group, the DSA unit and the department and will contribute to the development of Research & Technology activities in LIST. Moreover, you will actively contribute to the development of scientific and technological cooperation networks at the national and international level.

You should have an outstanding academic background and a very strong record of accomplishments as far as publications and project management are concerned. Significant experience with application-oriented research is an asset including collaboration(s) with industry and transfer of RD&I results to public and/or private partners. Experience organizing and/or participating in multilateral research consortia (such as EU projects) would be a great advantage for this function.

MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS

You hold a PhD in Computer Science / Engineering / Mathematics (or other related fields), with a strong background in Visualization / Visual Analytics research and have:

  • Around 15 years of experience after your PhD;
  • Strong track record of publications, and a genuine interest for applied research/technology and innovation transfer. You should be a recognized researcher in your field with a documented footprint in the scientific community;
  • As you will integrate a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that is strongly project and team oriented, you should be comfortable securing funding and managing a sustainable project portfolio ranging from fundamental to industrial / application-oriented research;
  • As experienced researcher in field of visualization and visual analytics, you can demonstrate strong expertise and proven experience in the design, implementation and assessment of beyond state-of-the-art methods, concepts, techniques in the field.
  • As visualization and visual analytics deliver their full value when coupled with an application domain, you should demonstrate how your results have benefitted to domain experts in science or business.
  • From this perspective, you should be able to provide examples of your capability to understand an application field and to integrate its specific constraints into a visualization / visual analytics proposal;
  • An outstanding academic background and a very strong record of accomplishments as far as publications and project management are concerned. Strong track record of Visualization-focused main-authored publications in prominent, top-tier journals and conferences (e.g. IEEE TVCG, VIS conference, EG CGF, EuroVis);
  • Strong knowledge of Visualization and Visual Analytics theories, paradigms, and techniques;
  • Good knowledge in evaluation methods for Visualization / Visual Analytics applications
  • Knowledge of tools, frameworks, programming languages used in visualization (to be able to lead and supervise software engineering tasks in the field);
  • Activity or membership within scientific or business networks;
  • Needless to say, you have proven experience in managing RDI projects and you have supervised PhD students;
  • Strong collaborative skills, result-oriented mindset, excellent organization and capacity to work in a dynamic, cross-functional environment;
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills (oral, written, presentation), including vs technical, management/executive and business audiences.
  • On top of that, you have an excellent level both written and spoken English, any of Luxembourg’s administrative languages (Luxembourgish, French, German) is a plus. You’re the one we’re looking for!

NICE TO HAVE REQUIREMENTS

Furthermore, we consider as an asset:

  • Experience organizing and/or participating in multilateral research consortia (such as EU projects);
  • Specific expertise in one or several following topics: visualization combined with Artificial
  • Intelligence, visualization combined with Augmented Reality;
  • Significant experience with application-oriented research including collaboration(s) with industry and transfer of RD&I results to public and/or private partners. Visualization / Visual Analytics applications as part of concrete business-facing projects, e.g. Industry 4.0 / Automotive / Health / Finance;
  • Strong track record of acquired projects in a competitive setup (EU/national programs, business development, etc.), experience in a business/industry-facing environment;
  • Any previous awards, fellowships or patents;
  • Experience in supervising PhD students.
