Our novel designs address cost and performance limitations to revolutionize spaceflight and military operations. We have contracts with NASA, the U.S. military, and commercial space companies all around the world and have delivered multiple spaceflight deployable systems for use on U.S. government orbital programs. 

We currently have an opportunity for a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer. In this role, you will report to the Supervisor of Design Engineering Team and be responsible for development, qualification and delivery of high-performance deployable structures.  This person will also provide oversight of operational teams to meet project goals throughout the product development lifecycle.

Summary of Role

  • Act as a collaborative member of a design team in development, qualification, and delivery of high-performance deployable structures for on-orbit environments, developing technical work plans and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain a full system design and its associated documentation – CAD, drawings, ICDs, BOMs, etc.
  • Provide technical support during flight build, test, and delivery to other areas of the technical execution team
  • Work closely with the manufacturing team through build, test, and delivery of flight hardware

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, physics, mathematics, or other space-related discipline.
    Minimum of 5+ years of industry/related experience, including developing, building, and testing space flight hardware
  • Minimum of 5+ years of space deployable structure experience
  • Must be able to develop and present project information to the internal team and external customers
  • Expert knowledge of CAD (SolidWorks preferred) functionality and PDM systems
  • Working within an AS9100 or similar accredited environment
  • Experience leading and mentoring junior engineers
  • US Citizen or Green Card holder authorized to work in the US (visa sponsorship not accepted).

Desired Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of space design best practices and lessons learned
  • Background in structural analysis, familiarity with load path analysis, stiffness path development, etc.
  • Experience conducting stress/modal/thermal analysis
  • Familiarity with metrology methods to measure precision of large-scale space structures
  • Experience with deployable systems that incorporate longerons and battens
  • Familiarity with aerospace guidelines such as GSFC-STD-7000A (GEVS), MMPDS, etc
  • Strong understanding of design for manufacturability and experience optimizing designs for production
  • Experience designing offloading systems for testing systems in a 1G environment
  • Competency in high precision, high reliability space systems
  • Experience with techniques for requirement generation and establishing appropriate verification criteria
  • In-depth understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack up analysis
  • Broad knowledge of space manufacturing processes (composites, metallic machining, coatings/heat treatment, etc.)
  • Comfortable suggesting internal process improvements
  • Experience with techniques for requirement generation and establishing appropriate verification criteria
  • Background in composites design, analysis, and manufacturing
