Magma Space is an innovative tech start-up company that was created to bring a new concept of magnetic bearing to the space community without compromising power requirements or performance.

We are looking for an entrepreneurial and motivated aerospace/mechanical engineer who will help us advance our technology and bring it to market within 3 years. Magma Space is currently working on a project for a magnetically levitated reaction wheel sponsored by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center but there are more exciting, innovative products in the pipeline for future R&D projects with the public and private sector. The aerospace/mechanical engineer will be able to cover the whole development process from design to prototype while gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Magma Space is located in Washington, DC, in the beautiful Navy Yard neighborhood.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support a full lifecycle product development (design, develop, test prototypes, manufacture and implement)
  • Generate new concepts for improving mechanical design capabilities
  • Design systems and components that meet needs and requirements
  • Perform structural analyses (FEA through Nastran or Solidworks simulations)
  • Conduct experiments methodically, analyze data and interpret results
  • Specify needs for various components with vendors, evaluate and order necessary items
  • Creates Bill of Materials (BOM) for the mechanical elements of the prototype build
  • Inspect mechanical parts once delivered by vendor
  • Identify, formulate and produce effective solutions to emerging problems
  • Alter and modify design to meet requirements and to eliminate malfunctions
  • Prepare product reports and documentation
  • Engage in lifelong learning and develop new theories or methods
  • Collaborate with other team members to verify compliance with requirements and customer expectations


  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical discipline with 2 years of related experience, or Master’s degree in a similar discipline without experience.
  • Hands-on experience in a lab environment.
  • Familiarity with 2D or 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SolidEdge or other).
  • Adequate knowledge of engineering analysis tools (Nastran/Patran, Comsol, ANSYS or similar)
  • Mathematical computing and analysis tools knowledge (Matlab, Simulink, Excel etc).
  • Solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science etc.
  • Familiarity with space environment.
  • Critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good communication (oral, written, presentation), interpersonal, negotiation and organizational skills.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience of assembly, integration and testing.
  • Experience with space mechanisms
