Description:

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for leading a team of Test Engineers dedicated to rocket engine acceptance testing in our new, state-of-the art engine production facility in Huntsville, Alabama. As the Test Engineering Manager, you will lead efforts to install, qualify, and activate acceptance test facilities and equipment in the Huntsville facility.  You will also lead and/or participate in the training, development, standardization and improvement of test engineering processes in Huntsville and other Blue Origin operating sites. As an integral member of the Huntsville team, you will lead and ensure successful completion of test readiness reviews in support of low-rate initial production in Huntsville. The permanent location of this position is Huntsville, Alabama. The site is slated to open Q1 2020. We intend to start the candidate in the current facility in Kent, Washington then transition the role to Huntsville. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable human spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and develop the Huntsville Test Engineering team
  • Provide technical and personal leadership to the Huntsville Test Engineering team
  • Collaborate with peer group in Kent, WA to identify, develop and acquire test equipment and tooling needed for factory test facilities activation
  • Lead and execute applicable test readiness review processes in support of factory activation
  • Ensure timely release of test procedures and related technical processes in support of engine and engine component acceptance testing
  • Manage workflow and balance priorities across the team in order to support factory objectives
  • Coordinate and work closely with factory management to meet test milestones
  • Apply robust, consistent, and reliable engineering fundamentals and processes to ensure product integrity and process capability
  • Drive the team to early identification and optimization of acceptance testing standard work
  • Review and understand company-wide processes and command media to ensure proper compliance
  • Manage roles, responsibilities, and accountability for each direct report and across the team
  • Manage department budgets, staffing levels and capital equipment needs
  • Support or lead PFMEA studies to strengthen the feedback loop between design, build, and test
  • Lead maturation and improvement of test work instruction software

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited institution
  • 8+ years of relevant acceptance testing/test engineering experience
  • 4+ years of managing direct reports and projects or programs
  • Experience managing a test engineering team in a production environment
  • Experience in developing and managing to department financial targets
  • In-depth understanding of test engineering principles including high pressure and flow of fluids, and component-level environmental testing
  • Previous experience and success in developing/starting new test facilities
  • Strong personnel and project management skills
  • Ability to operate, make decisions, lead, and make forward progress in ambiguous environments
  • Understanding of product life cycle management and associated test readiness reviews
  • Proficiency in business and engineering software (i.e. MS Office, Windchill, PLM, etc)
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Master of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university
  • Advanced experience in acceptance testing of  complex hardware
  • Previous engineering leadership in an aerospace environment with space hardware, aircraft or similar, mission critical high value components
  • Previous experience leading an engineering team during a facility activation or product line transition
