We’re on the hunt for a Staff Systems Engineer – Security in our Geointelligence Engineering Team at our Richmond office.

Our mission is to turn data into insight. From detecting changes in fragile ecosystems to monitoring northern ice floes and shipping routes, our near-real time data of Earth observation and the environment makes our Geointelligence team a leader in geospatial imagery, ground stations, enterprise geospatial systems and defence programs.

As a member of the Engineering team you will work on our programs such as Chorus Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Satellite, Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC), Square Kilometer Array (SKA) radio telescope, Aeronautical Navigation products, and Marine Insights products. You will work as part of a technical team to develop new capabilities, enhance existing capabilities and deliver solutions to our customers.

The Position

  • As a Staff Systems Engineer – Security, you would have responsibilities as the technical authority for security engineering elements for MDA’s Earth Observation space missions, large defence contracts such as CSC and diverse in-house developed products spanning from cloud based geointelligence platforms to our Laser Warning and Countermeasures system.
  • Excellent internal and external communication and leadership skills are necessary in order to lead your team, work closely with the customer, with other technical teams, and to support the development of robust, secure and cost effective systems.
  • The successful candidate will have a blend of deep security knowledge, systems engineering experience, and experience working within defence contracts.


As the Security Technical Authority and lead of the Security Engineering team for Geointelligence, you will ensure expert support is provided to various product/project teams to ensure that they address the security target and comply with applicable policies, procedures and standards. You will define the target security posture and/or the security requirements for projects and solutions during their definition and development. You and your team will provide insight into vulnerability management and response within complex information systems. Specifically this includes analyzing target environments identifying potential security vulnerabilities, policy violations, unexpected or undesired behaviour and activity.


As a Staff Systems Engineer – Security, you may have a wide range of responsibilities that include:

  • Function as the overall Technical Authority for all security engineering activities involved in the Geointelligence products/projects;
  • Consulting on the overall system architectures and operations concepts from a security perspective;
  • Develop and maintain all security related system artefacts (e.g. specifications, ICDs, profiles, test documents, etc) from the customer level down to the major subsystem level;
  • Derive security requirements, designs, solutions and mechanisms in response to current DND security focus including CSE Security Controls and Directives;
  • Develop and lead all security acceptance and accreditation programs for Classified systems;
  • Support engineering program delivery through the development and generation of security related artefacts such as engineering plans, engineering budgets, design reports, and operational concepts;
  • Oversee the acceptance plans for security related aspects of the product/system;
  • Support cost estimates and presentations to both customers and senior management as necessary; and
  • Act as group lead, responsible for scheduling and assigning work, reviewing the technical adequacy of work products, meeting cost and schedule for security deliverables and for interface coordination with other groups


Mandatory experience and skills:

  • 15+ years of well-structured systems engineering experience;
  • 10+ years’ working on Classified security solutions for Canadian military customers;
  • Strong understanding of DND project delivery and execution processes from requirements through commissioning and support;
  • Proven experience in the delivery and accreditation of systems against CSE ITS guidance (e.g. ITSG-11/22/33/38), NDSODs, Canadian EMSEC standards and the Canadian Security Assessment and
  • Authorization Guideline;
  • Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP);
  • Experience maintaining close working relationships with other system engineers and customer representatives;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and customer interaction skills, and
  • Exceptional leadership skills, problem solving abilities and project execution strengths.

Preferred experience and skills:

  • Experience in accreditation (risk assessment and governance) of Classified systems for DND involving information systems, cross domain solutions and multi-domain interoperability;
  • Experience in the following areas: Network Defense principles and practice, User Security
  • Management/Privileged Access Management, Information Security, Cross Domain Solutions,
  • Vulnerability Management and Threat Risk Assessment;
  • Experience with NIST SP-800 suite (e.g.-53, -160) ISO/IEC, DISA STIGs, CIS, SANS standards;
  • Experience in creatively meeting security requirements and established quality standards in the context of project constraints;
  • Experience in developing security elements as inputs to System Engineering Management Plans;
  • Experience in designing, deploying and working in Security Operation Centres; including technologies such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Intrusion Detection
  • System (IDS), Intrusion prevention System (IPS), and machine learning technologies is an asset.
  • Hands-On experience with one or more of the following products: Microsoft Enterprise network suite of software, SIEMs, vulnerability assessment tools, virtualization technologies continuous monitoring and data loss preventation tools;
  • Establishing Business Continuity Plans and Disaster Recovery Programs;
  • Open Source Security Testing Methodology Manual;
  • OWASP References and SQL Vulnerabilities,
  • Experience in building complex system security solutions within a SysML environment based on standard frameworks (e.g. ToGAF, Zachman, NAF, etc);
  • Familiarity with requirements management software such as DOORS,
  • Certifications such as:
    • Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP), or
    • Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).


  • A University degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related field from an accredited institution.
