The substrate is the set of intelligent, high-value services and compliant environments that is enabling the next generation of transformative end-user experiences for Office and the entire company.

The Substrate App Platform group is part of the M365 Core Platform organization. This is an interesting point in time as M365  evolves from an email platform to a platform that enables a deep pipeline of Microsoft apps and services that leverage the Substrate’s scale and high-value data to deliver intelligent experiences to end-users. We need the best to take the initiative and work with engineers across E+D and Microsoft to build the next-gen platform in the Substrate.

To deliver on our mission to empower people and organizations to achieve more, we need to create intuitive user experiences, develop scalable backend systems that leverage high-value data to deliver intelligent experiences to end-users. You will collaborate on and negotiate your designs across our partner engineering teams and work closely with our PMs to design, build, and maintain an extensible set of features that will lay the foundation for our customers.

The position is full-time and based in our Nairobi office.


  • Drive modern software engineering practices through design reviews and influence ongoing design, architecture, standards, and methods for operating services and systems.
  • The implementations typically involve writing scalable, distributed, and highly efficient components and shipping large-scale backend services.
  • Develop best practices in engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, and reusable as well as adhering to all the privacy and compliance guidelines in handling critical user data.
  • Collaborating with other engineers to build demos and apps to be able to contribute new ideas.


Required Qualifications:  

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering (or related fields like Electronics Engineering, Mathematics).
  • Knowledge of data structures and algorithms and algorithm optimizations.
  • 2+ years of software design and development experience with backend services or front-end technologies like ReactJs.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in any object-oriented programming language such as C++, C#, or Java.

Preferred Qualifications:

A successful candidate will show skills in the following areas:

  • Good understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns.
  • Passion for problem-solving.
  • Data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong communication and cross-group collaboration skills.
  • Experience in Azure, Exchange, or other cloud and distributed systems is a plus.
