Company Details

ONERA, a central player in aeronautical and space research, prepares the defense of tomorrow, responds to the aeronautical and space challenges of the future, and contributes to the competitiveness of the aerospace industry.
Presentation of ONERA
ONERA, a central player in aeronautical and space research, employs more than 2,000 people. Placed under the supervision of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, it has a budget of 266 million euros (2022), more than half of which comes from study, research and test contracts. State expert, ONERA prepares the defense of tomorrow, responds to the aeronautical and space challenges of the future, and contributes to the competitiveness of the aerospace industry. He masters all the disciplines and technologies in the field. All the major civil and military aerospace programs in France and Europe carry part of ONERA’s DNA: Ariane, Airbus, Falcon, Rafale, missiles, helicopters, engines, radars, etc. Recognized internationally and often awarded, its researchers train many doctoral students.
Presentation of the department
The Multi-Physics Department for Energetics carries out research and studies for the benefit of industrialists and state services in the aerospace field, both civil and military, but also in close connection with the academic world. The Department’s activities are divided into six strategic areas: Innovative energy systems; The performance of the propulsion systems; Experimentation under representative conditions; Multi-physics modeling and simulation; Safety and environmental impact; Multi-physics software platforms.
Missions
At the Multi-Physics Department for Energetics (DMPE), the Modeling Research Unit for Rocket Propulsion (MPF) is in particular in charge of studies relating to the operation of liquid propellant and solid propellant thrusters in the field of defense and space.
As part of a research project in the field of defence, your mission will consist of using your skills in mechanics of solid systems and in applied mathematics to contribute to the development, industrialization and validation of an original feature of overlapping meshes in the CEDRE multiphysics code developed in the department. This is implemented to study the movement of solid bodies in a flow and their reciprocal interactions (see a demonstration of the capabilities of the tool on the link https://youtu.be/EcWb41xLv3c ).
You will work more specifically on taking into account, in the mesh overlapping algorithm, the relationships (contacts, connections and constraints) that may exist between various moving parts to calculate the torsor of the forces applied to each of them and to deduce from it by numerical integration of their relative motion at each instant. You will also be responsible for defining a logic of increasing complexity for verification and validation of the tool, and for simulating the various calculation cases envisaged.
The improvement of this functionality is strategic for the targeted applications which require an accurate, robust and low-cost simulation of the movement of one or more mobile objects in mutual interaction and in interaction with the flow.
This position will be the subject of an open-ended contract Project or Research Operation Contract for a project of a minimum duration of 18 months.
Profile
- Doctor and/or Engineer with a solid background in mechanics of solid systems and in applied mathematics
- Successful experience of code development and simulations appreciated
- Fluency in written and oral communication
- Good command of English
