Presentation of ONERA
ONERA, a central player in aeronautical and space research, employs more than 2,000 people. Placed under the supervision of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, it has a budget of 266 million euros (2022), more than half of which comes from study, research and test contracts. State expert, ONERA prepares the defense of tomorrow, responds to the aeronautical and space challenges of the future, and contributes to the competitiveness of the aerospace industry. He masters all the disciplines and technologies in the field. All the major civil and military aerospace programs in France and Europe carry part of ONERA’s DNA: Ariane, Airbus, Falcon, Rafale, missiles, helicopters, engines, radars, etc. Recognized internationally and often awarded, its researchers train many doctoral students.
Presentation of the department
The Electromagnetism and Radar Department, DEMR, brings together all the skills in the fields of electromagnetism and associated radar applications. Spread over three sites (Palaiseau, Toulouse and Salon de Provence), it affects a wide range of actors in the world of Defense (DGA, Industrialists, SMEs/SMIs), the academic community, the European Union, ESA and other international entities outside the European Union. It is at the origin or develops many innovative radar concepts, exploited in significant achievements (GRAVES, NOSTRADAMUS, passive radar, SETHI, HYCAM, etc.). The corresponding projects are supported by the DGA, the ESA, the European Union and other industrial or public customers.
Missions
The “Propagation, Environment and Radiocommunications” unit studies the effects of propagation in the Earth’s environment on radiocommunication systems (radar, electronic warfare, radionavigation, telecommunications) for the benefit of players in the aeronautical and space fields as well as defense systems, and also promotes its skills for the benefit of industry outside these areas. In particular, it carries out characterization activities of the environment and the EM environment during test campaigns in the laboratory or in the field, and processes and uses the data collected. It manages a fleet of satellite reception stations in France and in tropical and equatorial regions. Its activities are recognized at the highest international level.
You will be more particularly responsible for studies and research on the behavior of the propagation channel in the atmosphere for the improvement of the performance of communications links for aerospace systems (satellites, aircraft) at frequencies above 10 GHz in civil contexts and defense, i.e.:
- The development of physical and statistical propagation models based on a detailed description of the troposphere and channel models allowing the dimensioning and optimization of adaptive satellite communication systems;
- The experimental validation of propagation models through the implementation of Earth-Space propagation campaigns in different regions of the world, the processing and exploitation of the data collected and the generation of appropriate statistics;
- The design and evaluation of the performance of space, aeronautical or terrestrial radiocommunication links subject to disturbances linked to the tropospheric propagation channel, and of adaptive techniques making it possible to compensate for these effects.
Your work will take place within the framework of CNES, ESA or DGA projects, or internal and multidisciplinary projects of ONERA and in particular of DEMR. You will be required to collaborate with various industrial partners and operators (ADS, TAS, Eumetsat, Eutelsat, ETI and SMEs, in particular from the Occitanie Region, etc.), with French (ISAE, ENAC, TéSA, etc.) and European laboratories (Politecnico di Milano , Joanneum Research, FFI, Univ. Madrid, etc. or international organizations (NASA, ISRO, NICT, etc.) and to contribute to international standardization bodies (ITU-R).
Eventually, you will be able to participate in choosing the axes to be developed and invest yourself in the scientific animation of the activities. You will also contribute to the scientific influence of ONERA through the supervision of interns or doctoral students, the writing of publications, as well as by participating in congresses.
Profile
- Engineer / doctor beginner or with experience with a solid scientific training in the fields of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science;
