Who we are?

Orbital Outpost X is an ambitious start up working towards building a commercial space station in Low Earth Orbit. We envision a station that is capable of growing with the market and provide a range of services to the upcoming LEO economy. We want to be able to host up to 100 humans in LEO for a range of activities. We are searching for ideal candidates who are interested in pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible is space and are able to think creatively to solve the challenges that will be needed to make a human populated space station a reality.

Job description:

The ideal candidate will not be discouraged by difficult work. We are a small company, 1 year old company that will give its employees ample room to grow and expand their knowledge and careers.

The successful applicant will be responsible for leading and developing complex system architectures (such as Orbital Outpost 1, OO1) ushering them from operational concept through preliminary and detailed design, simulation, and test. As a cross-functional engineer, you are in charge of system-level ownership of new products and processes through the product lifecycle. This role will require working with junior engineers and providing guidance and training to them.


This function is responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Lead the mission definition and dimensioning of disruptive space station systems
  • Develop an innovative, forward-looking and groundbreaking space systems in all engineering phases
  • Develop and maintain:
    • System engineering processes
    • Technical budgets for the space station systems
    • System requirements and verification techniques
    • Simulations and analysis
    • Test methods and data analysis
  • Develop, in collaboration with team members, interface specifications, CONOPS definition, and other design documents
  • Drafting and supervising of technical documentation, preparation of presentations and support to the Chief Engineer and Program Manager

Required knowledge:

  • Experience in the aerospace industry, particularly in spacecraft and/or human spaceflight programs strongly preferred
  • Space systems engineering and development standards in space HW/SW projects in NASA and/or ESA (ECSS) domains.
  • Thorough understanding of requirements management, functional requirements parsing, derivation, and allocation; systems design, systems integration, technical risk identification and management strategies, and Verification and Validation (V&V) principles
  • Technical experience in a spacecraft discipline (Avionics, Power, Thermal, Propulsion, Flight Software, Structures, Mechanisms, etc.)
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary design and development teams
  • Experience conducting internal and external milestone reviews
  • Strong competency in project and/or team management
  • Superior organization and communication skills
  • Microsoft office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, PowerPoint)
  • Creative problem solver
  • Effective in working in a start-up environment

Desirable Knowledge:

  • Experience as a chief engineer/team leader
  • Knowledge of industry design and construction standards
  • Advanced experience with requirements management and system modeling tools (Matlab, NoMagic, Valispace, etc.)
  • Experience in Model Based System Engineering (MBSE), including knowledge of SysML, UAF, digital twins and digital threads
  • Experience or certification in INCOSE standards
  • Experience leading baseline definition and maturation in a complex development setting, including the use of high impact trade studies and technical performance measurements
  • Spanish is a plus

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (masters or higher preferred) in Aerospace Engineering, Robotics or similar field

Required Experience

  • 15+ years of relevant experience, preferably leading the development of complex space systems and spacecraft
