About the Role:  

Planet efficiently and safely operates a unique large heterogeneous fleet of >200 satellites on-orbit. Managing these valuable assets is a highly technical feat and the teams consist of skilled engineers from a variety of backgrounds, having collectively worked on more than 30 space missions.

As a Space Systems Engineer Intern, you will be involved with expanding our systems validation and testbed ecosystem for existing and upcoming spacecraft. The Systems Validation Ecosystem, is a fully integrated end-to-end system encompassing ground-based lab satellites and all critical paths utilized in Mission Operations. This ecosystem is utilized by the satellite operations team to rapidly create, deploy, and test software, explore operational experiments and evaluate new techniques to investigate satellite behavior before on-orbit execution.

You can anticipate working in a close collaborative environment, frequently communicating with hardware and software experts to understand the spacecraft, develop procedures for validating spacecraft and helping shape the way we do operations. This involves:

  • Collaborative learning with Hardware/Software teams of the Spacecraft Bus and Nominal operations
  • Coding Spacecraft Operational Test Scenarios
  • Writing integration tests to analyze spacecraft data to validate spacecraft performance
  • Developing tools and processes to support efficient multi-mission operations.
  • Our team is the first to detect and triage anomalous behavior, therefore an understanding of how each spacecraft subsystem relates to one another is important.

What You Bring:

  • Experience with Python scripts development, and code version control
  • Enthusiasm to dig down rabbit holes to debug an issue when needed
  • Desire to automate documentation
  • Ability to quickly pick up new concepts and to contribute with innovative solutions

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Experience in process automation, from design to software development
  • Previous experience in spacecraft or related flight operations
  • Previous  space systems integration & test experience
  • Experience with data analysis and trending
  • Experience using project management tools and issue trackers
