About the role

Under the supervision of the Electronics Lead, the successful applicant will undertake electronics and firmware design and development activities as part of an R&D project team. The role will allow autonomy and leading of high-level engineering tasks.

As an Electrical Engineer you can anticipate some of your day-to-day tasks to include:

  • PCB schematic capture and layout design using Altium Designer
  • Component library creation
  • Prototype PCB assembly and modification by hand (comfortability working on SMD components down to 0402)
  • Cable harness design using Solidworks Electrical Schematic
  • Cable harness assembly
  • Bench, Hardware-in-the-loop, and field testing of Skyborne UAS platforms
    • Generating and following QA procedures for prototype PCBs
    • Troubleshooting hardware for both personal PCB designs and existing designs with and without access to schematics
    • Design of automated PCB testing procedures using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, smart power supplies and electronic loads
  • Firmware development for microcontrollers (C/C++)
    • Working with various interfaces, such as SPI, I2C, UART, RS485, CAN
  • Participating in schematic and layout design reviews
  • Undertake tasks within allocated timeframes
  • Use tools such as: JIRA/Atlassian Suite, GitLab, SVN
  • Facilitate collaboration with all Skyborne staff (Engineering & Business Divisions)
  • Local, interstate, and international travel to support field testing and customer demonstrations

The experience and skillset best suited to this role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering
  • 3+ years industry in an electronics design development team environment
  • Proficient use of Altium Designer
  • 2D and 3D CAD experience (AutoCAD/Solidworks)
  • SMD soldering ability for passives down to 0402 and ICs TSSOP
  • Hands on experience creating cable harnesses and crimping contacts for connectors down to 1.25mm pitch
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback on PCB schematics and layouts and implement accordingly
  • Passion for innovation and to work in a fast paced but rewarding environment
  • Ability to focus on specific problems and prioritize tasks in order to deliver best value to the business and stakeholders
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen to meet Defence security requirements
  • Eligibility and willingness to obtain an Australian Department of Defence security clearance

Additionally, it would be desirable that you have:

  • Exposure to Solidworks Electrical Schematic
  • Data analysis capabilities
  • Experience designing PCBs for highspeed data transmission
  • CASA remote pilot licence (RePL)
  • QLD Firearms Licence
  • Active Australian Department of Defence baseline security clearance
