RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform real-time ground segment operations according to timeline, procedures and flight rules
  • Perform pre and post mission analyses
  • Support and perform as a member of the flight control team for Falcon, Dragon, and Starship
  • Interface with external partners (private and government) to define control hardware and software interfaces for ground-to-space and ground-to-ground communication systems
  • Assist in the development of highly intuitive and automated operational interfaces for a variety of both commercial and SpaceX-built hardware
  • Support mission critical voice communications
  • Coordinate worldwide telemetry services for Day of Launch/prelaunch activities. May include SpaceX, commercial, AFSCN, and/or range telemetry sites
  • Perform trade studies to define communication system requirements and optimizations
  • Assist with proposals and specification development related to launch site production and launch vehicle-to-ground communication systems
  • Personally develop, design, test, and deploy mission-critical hardware as part of a close-knit team of exceptional ground segment and software

  • Work closely with internal SpaceX departments such as RF, Avionics, Mission Management, GNC, Legal, and Launch as well as outside government agencies such as USAF, NASA, FAA, FCC, and the NTIA

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or other engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of project or industry experience with RF, controls, and/or communications systems

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Experience with spacecraft or complex system operations

Demonstrated excellence in leadership, communications, and be a self-starter with a high level of autonomy

  • Ability to work with other departments/agencies as you will have a high degree of interaction with highly skilled technicians/engineers and customer coordination
  • Experience working with government organizations (USAF, NASA, FAA, FCC, NTIA, etc.)
  • RF engineering experience
  • Mastery of RTS voice communication systems or similar
  • Experience working with and organizing technical data with strong attention to detail
  • Experience developing link budgets and other engineering calculations related to system specification and design
  • LEO and/or MEO ground station operations and engineering experience
  • Mastery in the use of Visio or other CAD software to develop system schematics
  • Manipulation and use of tracking and orbit determination files, formats, and tools
  • Experience with GNU Radio or similar signal processing libraries

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
  • Ability to travel as required to common destinations including South Texas (SpaceX Starship Site), Cape Canaveral (SpaceX East Coast Launch Site), Vandenberg (SpaceX West Coast Launch Site) as well as any of the SpaceX national or international ground station sites
  • Must be willing to extended hours and weekends when necessary to support launch and critical project timelines
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 35 lbs. unassisted
  • Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position

Job is specific to Ground Segment and includes on-console operations of ground stations and communication links during launch and on-orbit operations of Falcon/Dragon/Starship vehicles. Applicant should have experience in operations, scripting/programming, RF, orbital mechanics, and an engineering degree.
