SPACE OPERATIONS TRAINING ENGINEER

SpaceX engineers are dedicated to refining all aspects humankind’s presence in space, from the performance of the vehicle they will travel in, to the innovative training they’ll receive for their missions. In this role you will focus on training mission control operators and astronauts how to fly their spacecraft, as well as developing new ways to streamline 21st century spaceflight training. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, train, and prepare operators and flight crew to fly the Dragon spacecraft
  • Schedule, plan, and execute training lessons for mission operators and flight crew
  • Develop subject matter expertise and teach others through clearly communicating technical concepts to a wide audience
  • Script, test, and execute training simulations for operators and flight crew
  • Establish and administer grading metrics and success criteria for evaluating operator and crew performance
  • Work with NASA operations and training teams to communicate training status, schedule, crew performance, and execute NASA-SpaceX integrated simulations
  • Train to be an on-console mission operator to support human spaceflight missions

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or science discipline
  • Past experience providing technical training to an audience that must apply it in a critical environment, or real-time operations experience on a complex system that has high consequence of failure (such as a pilot, flight or test engineer, spacecraft operator, high performance automotive, etc.)
  • Experience utilizing software tools to solve complex problems (Matlab, Python, Java, C++, etc.)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in a technical discipline
  • Previous experience with spacecraft/airplane engineering or operation
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Clear verbal and written communication of technical information
  • Capacity to balance conflicting opinions and manage expectations between multiple teams and customers
  • Able to quickly adapt and change course in a fast-paced environment
  • Past experience in a customer-facing role working through technical problems and negotiation
  • Insatiable hunger for continuous improvement and innovation

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to occasionally travel
  • Must be willing to work long hours and weekends to support launch operations and critical project timelines
  • Must be able to climb ladders, lift training equipment and spacesuits (25-40lbs), and climb around inside a spaceship

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
