This is a new role for SpaceX where you will build and lead a team of exceptional individuals to build the framework for and conduct operations analyses that will drive the future of spaceflight. The Operations Analysis discipline itself is a mesh of many other fields (e.g. Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, etc.) and frequently collaborates across functional disciplines, offering a unique opportunity to work with many areas.
In this role, you will lead the modeling and simulation of various launch vehicles, spacecraft, sensors, and missions, as well as analyzing a wide variety of architectures across multiple domains (ground, air and space). You will have great latitude to be creative, conceiving and testing various architectures to determine which is best suited to meet technical and programmatic objectives. From this work, you and your team will drive the development of system design criteria (requirements), and influence technology development roadmaps. You will work with vehicle and subsystem engineers, to recommend candidate architectures, and support the development of operational concepts and the interfaces between the nodes at the mission, segment, system, and sub-system levels
- Build and lead a multi-disciplinary team of mission designers and algorithm developers, collaborating with the software engineering team.
- Build tools and perform operations analyses of various system of systems architectures that include space vehicles, satellites, sensors, communications, and ground infrastructure, evolving or creating new approaches based on utility analysis results
- Create a library of system models of space, ground, and airborne systems, to enable inclusion in the simulation environment
- Evaluate the effectivity of various operational constructs in balancing the objectives of a wide set of desired capabilities, compared against other factors such as development and operational costs
- Communicate across engineering disciplines and technology areas to integrate capabilities you identify as the most beneficial to SpaceX
- Communicate technical capabilities and analyses with internal stakeholders and external customers
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or physics
- 5+ years of aerospace engineering experience
- Experience developing and executing physics-based space vehicle models and simulations
- Experience with Python
- Experience leading a team of engineers in a technical or formal capacity
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, physics or other relevant engineering discipline with at least 8 years of experience
- 2+ years of experience with sensor systems across the RF and optical spectrum
- Previous work assignments supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Intelligence Community (IC) architectures, requirements, and capabilities
- Demonstrated experience in launch vehicle and/or spacecraft systems
- Demonstrated experience using and/or creating satellite simulation tools.
- Demonstrated experience with multi-disciplinary optimization techniques
- Demonstrated capability to solve complex problems with little to no supervision, defining a project goals, constrained by resources and schedule, and leading a team of engineers to accomplish those goals on schedule
- Passion for advancing the space industry and spaceflight
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Demonstrated experience leading agile software development efforts
- Familiarity with NASA and other US Government architectures, requirements, and capabilities
- Active TS or TS/SCI clearance. Note that an active clearance may provide the opportunity for you to work on sensitive SpaceX missions. If so, you will be subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing
- Must be available to work extended hours and weekends when needed
- Must be able to travel, <10% of the time
