SPACE ROBOTICS SOFTWARE ENGINEER, SPACE LASERS (STARLINK)

The Starlink Space Laser team is responsible for designing the free space optical systems which enable high speed communication between satellites in orbit. These systems must be fully autonomous to enable reliable high speed communication over very long distances. As a Space Robotics Software Engineer you will be responsible for designing and implementing flight algorithms to control the terminal, working directly with hardware engineers to develop system requirements, and developing efficient realistic models of the terminal for use in simulation. This role interfaces closely with the design and production teams to deliver a hardware design that is capable of cost effective mass production on a much high scale than anyone has ever accomplished before.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop cutting edge algorithms to enable fast, reliable, and autonomous communication between satellites in the world’s largest satellite constellation
  • Develop high-fidelity models of electro-mechanical actuators, optical components, and sensors. Work directly with hardware engineers to design experiments to anchor and validate those models
  • Design and implement high performance control laws to enable precision beam control between satellites
  • Work with engineers across the company to evaluate future use cases of the laser terminal. Execute various first principal-based analysis to drive terminal design and capability

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics or mathematics
  • 2+ years of experience with the development of autonomous systems in simulation and hardware

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in engineering, physics or mathematics
  • Strong software development skills with C/C++
  • Experience with the design of closed loop control systems including modeling, linear/non-linear control, or estimation
  • Experience with the implementation of adaptive control systems that can optimize system operation or identify changing conditions
  • Capable of identifying and solving complex problems with little to no supervision or direction
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be available to work extended hours or weekends as necessary
