The Sr. Avionics Systems Integration Engineer is responsible for the design, build, integration, and testing of vehicle systems on Starship; the vehicle that will take humanity to Mars. This position will work on a cross-functional team of engineers that provide end-to-end coverage of avionics systems and are ultimately responsible for verifying the as-built hardware is “go-for-launch.”  This role will partner closely with adjacent Starship organizations to continuously improve the design and manufacturability of avionics systems and hardware and will represent avionics in vehicle-level trades.


  • Drive rapid progress of vehicle design, integration, test, and launch activities
  • Represent the avionics system in vehicle-level cross-disciplinary trades
  • Review test data and perform a hands-on engineering and liaison role between design engineering and production organization
  • Work with Avionics Production to triage, troubleshoot, root cause, and repair issues on an aggressive production schedule
  • Support Production Operations in the execution of ground test operations during the electrical integration and test campaign
  • Design electrical harnessing for flight and test applications, and integrate on assembly
  • Create and execute electrical test plans and test procedures for the flight vehicle
  • Perform manufacturing assessments of new designs and drive optimization for manufacturability and cost
  • Create comprehensive engineering documentation and assembly level work instructions necessary for the transition from prototype to production including both written and visual work instructions
  • Participate in design reviews to improve design for manufacturability, procurement cost, and quality control
  • Verify avionics system test coverage on flight or flight-representative hardware at the system level and validate the as-built vehicle is “go for launch”


  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with system level design, integration, or testing of electro-mechanical systems and/or components


  • Creative problem solver that can bring multiple disciplines together with the ability to assess risk and make design and development decisions without all available data
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight
  • Experience designing and building autonomous fault-tolerant robotic systems
  • Self-motivated with strong multi-tasking, organizational, communication and documentation skills
  • Experience with wire harnesses and associated sub-components
  • Experience with mechanical design and assemblies
  • Experience with software (e.g. python, SQL)
  • Experience installing and troubleshooting various electronic sensors and components
  • Competence with electrical test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.)
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Unigraphics, Solidworks or similar)
  • Knowledge of and experience in analog to digital and digital to analog converters, power supply components and design, analog testing/troubleshooting techniques, and signal integrity, layout and grounding principles
  • Experience with written and visual work instructions
  • Strong sense of accountability and integrity with excellent written and verbal communication skills


  • Position is based in South Texas with travel to Hawthorne required as needed
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones
