The Position

This position is based in Darmstadt. It is full-time and permanent and expected starting date will be February 1st 2023.

Are you passionate about space missions, ground segment, radar systems and seeking a meaningful opportunity to enfold your talents? Then you are on the right track!

The daily activities requested, will be supporting the European Space Agency (ESA) with highly qualified services at the European Operations Control Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt. In particular, the selected candidate will run a service at ESOC where he/she will provide expertise in the field of radar design for space debris and surveillance.

The selected candidate shall provide engineering services for the evolution, sustaining and maintenance of ground stations for radio frequency and optical space communication and space object tracking applications.

As part of this role, in close and direct collaboration with the client, the selected candidate will:

  • Engineering Support to preventive and corrective maintenance tasks, for problems requiring specific technical background in radar systems
  • Support to ground station developments, i.e. support to the definition of technical specifications and statement of works, participation to procurement tender evaluation boards in the role of expert, support to design reviews as well as support to factory and site acceptance tests.
  • Support to technology development activities, i.e. support to the definition of requirements, support in preliminary prototype and bread boarding activities, support to the evaluation of achievements.
  • Monitoring under ESA responsibility of development/procurement activities contracted to external industries
  • Support to operations during critical phases.

Some of the activities will require travel to ground station sites as well as to development / integration facilities.

Crucial Skills

  • University degree in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication or similar
  • Experience in the domain of Radar systems
  • Experience in:
    • Radar front-ends, i.e. phased array antenna for transmission and reception,
    • Radar back ends, i.e. radar signal processing for plots and tracks,
    • Radar infrastructure: power distribution, cooling systems, air-conditioning and civil works.
  • Fluency in English, both in speech and writing
  • Coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields
  • Able to work independently
  • Experience dealing with external interfaces
  • Familiarity with ESTRACK
  • The ability to multi-task efficiently

Desirable Skills

  • Project Management
  • A knowledge of ground station antennas and deep space systems
  • A knowledge of orbit determination
