We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineering Team Lead. As an UrtheCast Mechanical Engineering Team Lead, you will have overall responsibility for oversight and performance management of the Mechanical Engineering team alongside engaging in, at a senior level, thermal/structural/mechanical design and analysis activities. This is a full-time, fixed term contract (approx. 6 months) which could be filled by either an employee or an independent contractor.


Engineering Activities:

  • Mechanical design of components for SAR Payload, including complex assemblies (electronic enclosures)
  • Structural analysis of primary and secondary payload items, namely quasi-static, sine vibration, random vibration and shock
  • Thermal analysis of primary and secondary payload items
  • Create, maintain and alter CAD models
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to ensure performance and environmental specifications are met
  • Assist mechanical design of components
  • Generate test plans and procedures to assist in the verification of structural and thermal models through ground testing
  • Review and approve test reports
  • Support the Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) of the subsystems and overall system
  • Work with suppliers and contractors on ensuring their designs meet the thermo-mechanical requirements and fit into the overall system
  • Work with suppliers and contractors on the thermal and structural analyses and integrate this work into our in-house models for system level analyses
  • Assist in the verification and correlation of the thermal and structural models through both ground testing and on-orbit testing
  • Support the Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) of the subsystems and the overall system with emphasis on TVAC

Team Lead Activities:

  • Provide inputs to the VP Programs and VP Engineering for annual department budgets
  • Work with program managers to understand resource requirements
  • Work with the Director of Space Segment and HR to fill team vacancies
  • Define goals for the mechanical/thermal team as a whole as well as individuals based on the corporate goals and objectives
  • Hold performance reviews with team members
  • Complete career planning for team members
  • Define training plans for team members based on career objectives as well as capability needs of the department
  • Provide technical oversight of team activities
  • Define specialty software used by the team


  • Bachelor and/or Master’s in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
  • Registered or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer an asset
  • 5+ years’ experience performing structural FEA, preferably in aerospace industry
  • 3+ years’ experience performing thermal design and analysis (system and/or unit level), preferably in aerospace industry
  • 3+ years’ experience management experience overseeing small to medium sized engineering group
  • Experience in environmental testing and verification of space-borne hardware (vibration, thermal cycling, TVAC)


  • CAD modeling using SolidWorks (strongly preferred) or other CAD packages
  • Proficiency with a commercial FEA package (Patran, NX Nastran, Abaqus, Hyperworks, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Thermica, Thermal Desktop, Patran TFEA, NX Space Systems Thermal/TMG or other commercial thermal analysis software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of space industry and gate review process

  • Knowledge of NASA or ESA design, test and qualification processes
  • Knowledge of space industry qualification and test procedures for flight programs
  • Acoustic analysis and testing of space-borne hardware
