Our patented Off-Axis ICOS technique enables ruggedized and sensitive instruments, effectively bringing the laboratory to anywhere on Earth via vehicle, UAV, and backpack. The leap from benchtop to mobile measurements has led to the ability to find gas leaks over large areas reliably and within minutes, but robust algorithms and reliable measurement practices drive the next generation of Advanced Leak Detection. As part of the research and development team in San Jose, California, you will integrate state-of-the-art electronic, optical, and mechanical hardware and software to drive product innovations, and contribute to the emerging field of Advanced Leak Detection. A successful system engineer candidate will demonstrate a broad understanding of optics, mechanics, electronics, sensors, and engineering with a deeper understanding of one of these fields, be able to quickly master the system architecture of our leak detection products, and have a proven track record of innovation.

Your responsibilities

 

  • Develop novel solutions to improve the performance and expand the application space of ABB leak detection instruments
  • Master the electronic, optical, mechanical, electrical, and software integration of our leak detection suite of products
  • Individually and collaboratively design and perform experiments needed to qualify applications of new and current products
  • Work with colleagues, suppliers, and external researchers to test and improve the individual and integrated components of our analyzers
  • Handle analytical systems, subcomponents, assembly of test systems, and perform test experiments
  • Support manufacturing engineering in maintaining and updating manufacturing instructions and reviewing components
  • Support services department in reviewing, troubleshooting, repairing, and collecting repair data
  • Synthesize and communicate findings
  • Some travel may be required
  • A valid US driver’s license

 

Your background

 

  • B.S, M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems, or related engineering work and 2 years relevant experience
  • General working knowledge of integrated engineered measurement systems (electronics, optics, optoelectronics, mechanical, software)
  • Hands-on experience performing experiments, collecting data, and working on projects in a field and/or laboratory setting
  • Proven problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot unforeseen problems in a systematic, scientific method without direct instruction
  • Ability to develop, implement and launch initiatives related to product changes, new products, and new applications
  • Preferred experience with motion, such as: cars, drones, aircraft, etc.
  • Preferred experience with sensor fusion, such as: autonomous driving, robots, AR/VR, etc.
  • Preferred experience with gas spectroscopy and calibration methods
  • Licensed Engineer or Systems Engineering Certificate
  • Pilot license to fly drones (FAA Part 107)
  • Familiarity with engineering software and data analysis tools
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken)
  • Knowledge of French (written and spoken)
  • The ability to travel to Canada
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
