Job Description
Working within the Platform Engineering function, the Manager Systems Engineer (Inmarsat Safety Services) is responsible for supporting the portfolio of safety services across the Maritime and Aviation space. These include Inmarsat-C, the Maritime Safety & Distress Service (MSDS), Classic Aero, Swift Broadband Safety (SB-S) and IRIS.
The successful candidate will be required to ensure the systems are operating correctly at all times, responding to incidents, taking corrective action when needed, and proactively managing both the short-term (e.g. system faults, configuration changes, security vulnerabilities) and long-term (e.g. future enhancements) operation of these services.
The Manager Systems Engineering (Inmarsat safety service) will lead a small team of engineers, set their priorities to provide technical support and guidance, and set the standard of quality in work carried out for the rest of the team to follow.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the Safety Systems Engineering team and assist them as needed to complete their objectives
- Responsibility for the day-to-day operation of Inmarsat-C, MSDS, C Aero, SBS1, SBS2, and IRIS Systems located around the world.
- Inmarsat Subject Matter Expert for the systems mentioned above
- Responsibility for lifecycle management for all of the systems within the scope of the team’s responsibility. This will include pre-production testing and any vendor and/or internal coordination required to deploy new releases to the production systems
- Ensure the availability of Inmarsat safety services and follow any issues to resolution with the vendor as needed.
- Providing a third-line response to faults and failures and working to resolve them logically, methodically and efficiently.
- Managing changes and enhancements to safety services systems such that service availability is not compromised;
- Working with equipment manufacturers, software suppliers and other internal and external stakeholders to propose and assess changes and/or enhancements to safety services.
- Maintaining operational documentation relating to safety services systems;
- Keeping up-to-date with relevant developments in technology and assessing and recommending changes and/or upgrades to safety systems where appropriate;
- Participation in an after-hours on-call support rota.
Qualifications
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Significant experience in systems engineering in the field of telecommunications.
- Ability to manage multiple, overlapping tasks.
- Extensive hands-on experience with managing and upgrading Systems.
- Linux system administration and shell scripting
- Knowledge of mobile telecommunications and/or IP networking would be a distinct advantage
- Good oral and written communication, able to express ideas and describe problems clearly and succinctly and establish good working relationships with peers and other teams
- Patience and perseverance are required to get tasks completed in difficult circumstances
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor or Master’s degree in a suitable technical disciple such as Electronics, Telecommunication, Computer science, or similar
Desirable Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of satellite communications principles (especially Inmarsat-related).
- Familiarity with Inmarsat’s safety-related systems (Inmarsat-C, MSDS, Classic Aero).
- Programming/scripting experience (e.g. C, C++, C#, perl, python, java, HTML, etc.).
