Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Senior Mechanical Engineer on our newly formed Engine Layout Team, specifically for work on the Next-Gen Newton Engine Components.  In this position, you will develop structural/mechanical hardware and systems on the LauncherOne small satellite launch program.  This responsibility is usually “cradle-to-grave”, in which you own a project from requirements setting, through design, analysis, production, and testing, to integration and flight.

It’s not unusual for our engineers to find themselves out on the floor (or at the launch site) solving exciting problems one week, and then back in the office designing/analyzing novel, light-weight hardware the next.

Generally, hardware ownership can include items such as primary and secondary structures, mechanisms, and separation systems, as well as associated high-level layouts.  For this specific role, we are looking for someone to help with the layout and components design for our next-generation Newton engines.  To that end, we are partial to candidates with experience in fluid line routing, mounting, and analysis.

Your Mission

  • Design and analyze critical components of secondary structures, fluid system layout, as well as hardware and plumbing related to vehicle valves, mountings and hydraulic/pneumatic mechanisms.
  • Develop a variety of vehicle structural elements and configurations in concert with other engineering disciplines.
  • Assist in the development of manufacturing, integration, and test processes and procedures.
  • Support launch and mission operations.

What you bring

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field.
  • 5+ years of experience in an aerospace design & manufacturing environment.
  • Self-driven, with a strong background in pragmatic project management, problem solving, organization, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement.

Skills We Value

  • Expertise in Finite Element Analysis using industry tools such as FEMAP, NASTRAN, and ANSYS.
  • Expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) drafting.
  • Knowledge of the design, analysis, fabrication, and test of composite and metallic structures, and/or mechanisms.
  • Engineering experience in aerospace, racing, or similar fields, where mass and schedule are critical.
  • Experience in NX/Teamcenter.
  • Experience in low cost commercial space system ventures.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’.
