Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Avionics Hardware Mechanical Engineer. If you join us in this position, you will assist in the design, development, and verification of high-performance Avionics hardware for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. You will see the hardware you’ve designed and touched fly into space. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.
- Work with a team of electrical, integration, structural, and propulsion engineers to implement a set of requirements in order to design avionics hardware to assure mission success and safety to the public and crew.
- Design enclosures, parts, and mounting devices for Avionics electronics components with emphasis on ruggedization for the spaceflight environment
- Serve as the technical engineer to design, model, analyze, build, test, and troubleshoot avionics hardware.
- Produce engineering drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Work with manufacturing, production, and purchasing to source and assemble avionics components, tools, and assemblies.
- Write and review assembly procedure documentation for avionics subassemblies
- Assist in the development and integration of avionics sensing, control, and processing boards.
- Support environmental test as needed, including thermal, vibration, shock, EMI/EMC, and radiation tests on hardware components.
- Participate in and lead design reviews, technical reviews, trade studies, analyses, and data reviews.

What you bring

- MS, in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as NX, Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, ProE or Catia.
- Working knowledge of machine shop processes and familiarization with the structural and thermal analysis process in development of electronics packaging
- Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 standards for geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T)
- Ability to perform dimensional fit tolerance and stack up analyses of assembly designs
- Drive to constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
- Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment

- 3+ years of recent electronics packaging experience designing for aerospace or equivalent
- Experience in all phases of the design process including concept brainstorming, requirements definition, prototyping, detailed design, analysis, manufacturing, assembly and validation.
- Familiarity with alloys, adhesives, sealing materials, and EMI shielding materials common to aerospace design
- Experience in NX/Teamcenter
- Familiarity with requirements and test methods for harsh environments including thermal, vibration, shock, EMI/EMC, and radiation. Familiarity with one or more of the following standards: SMC-S-016, DO-160, MIL-STD-810G
- Familiarity with IPC-A-600/610, DO-254, NASA-STD-8739, or similar standards
- Experience with designing safety critical hardware components and performing failure mode effects analyses
- Experience in Finite Element Analysis using industry tools such as FEMAP, PATRAN, NASTRAN, and ANSYS
- Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
- Ability to thrive as a “one person team”
