Position Summary

Virgin Orbit is seeking an experienced Facilities Lead to manage the company’s operational facilities at Necker North in Mojave, CA. The Facility Lead is responsible for the day-to-day management of the facility in line with the Virgin Orbit Facilities. The key measure of success is a well-managed, well-maintained facility, which enables VO’s to successfully operate customer activities.

This is a hands-on position that coordinates the activities, financials, contractors, and manpower required for the current and future needs of the Necker North test site in Mojave, CA. Developing and maintaining strong working relationships and supervising the day-to-day activities of maintenance and other building staff as well as contract services. This position will eventually be responsible for directly supervising a small team which may include building technicians, security, and other contracted staff. In the meantime, the Facility Lead should expect to get his or her hands dirty and be prepared to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Overall responsibility for overseeing the implementation of policies, procedures, and projects that will lead to a well-managed, well-maintained building and facilities in coordination and conjunction with the company’s business objectives.

Develops a preventative maintenance program to ensure the facility is operating optimally.

Hands-on involvement to ensure the day-to-day operations of the facility(s), including janitorial, health and safety, and general maintenance of Mechanical and Electrical systems (including lighting, HVAC, plumbing).

Supervision of all maintenance and janitorial contracts relating to the interior and appearance of the facilities.

Responsible, at all times, for positive and prompt responses to requests from the VO team and managing leased services to ensure problems are being solved promptly and effectively.

Prepares and reviews budgets, provides financial reporting (as required), develops and manages contract terms, monitors expenditure and purchase orders related to the facilities.

Participates in the negotiation of service contracts with internal and external suppliers/customers to achieve the highest levels of performance at the lowest cost in compliance with the organization’s values, standards, and guidelines for business conduct.

Ensures regulatory compliance (including ITAR policy, NM building code, OSHA, ADA, etc) and effective management of risk and liability for the company, including maintaining files and policy documents in order to support audits.

Supports and provides leadership in a commitment to achieve the company’s goals for service. Consistently upholds and applies the company’s policies regarding appropriate professional behavior.

Manages the landlord relationship and contracted lease services to ensure compliance with lease agreements.

Provide training on the Necker North site to VO Staff and new hires as necessary, as they are on-boarded.

Lead the facility management team in the supervision of all maintenance programs relating to the interior and exterior conditions and appearance and operation of the facilities.

Ensure that all site-specific documentation and reports are completed accurately and on time. Ensures that all suppliers comply with insurance requirements.

Your Mission

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certifications or similar within aerospace, aviation, or automotive.
  • Graduated from a technical college or other recognized apprenticeship.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience directly supervising and managing staff, including experience in planning and assigning work, performance assessments, training, hiring, discipline, and development.
  • Must be able to operate company vehicles and/or equipment.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • 10+ years’ facilities, aerospace testing, and engineering experience.
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team.
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness.
  • CFM, FMA, BOMA, LEED, industry certifications desired, other Engineering, Business, or technical training or certifications a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills (written reports/analysis and oral presentation).
  • Strong relationship building and management skills and demonstrated experience working with multiple support contractors.
  • Possess a positive “Can Do” attitude by stepping up and taking additional responsibilities and adapting to changes in this fast-paced environment.
  • Strong literacy in MS Word and Excel.
  • Self-motivated, self-disciplined, and enjoys working independently.
  • Recognized Project Management qualification and/or proven experience in managing construction-based projects.
  • The breadth of experience in leasing, construction, engineering, and all facets of building management is preferred.
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted).
  • Valid CA driver’s license required with clean driving record.

  • Must have knowledge and experience with financial accounting in commercial real estate, financial reporting, and budgeting.
  • Technical proficiency and experience in common building systems and equipment.
  • Strong customer service/tenant relation skills required.
  • Physical and/or Additional Requirements.
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours min.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted).

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
