Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a Supplier Quality Engineer to play in integral role in the Supply Chain Team for the LauncherOne satellite launch program. Specifically, the individual will support the development and manufacturing of supplier contracted parts and assemblies. The ideal candidate will be experienced in: supplier quality, root cause corrective action, supplier evaluations, and quality systems Ex AS9100 and ISO 9000. In addition the following experience is preferred: new product introduction, and managing the transition of suppliers from development to full scale production. Experience in the development of standardized production processes with suppliers will be essential to this role. Plus, experience with lean manufacturing, and quality and cost improvement at suppliers is highly desired. In addition, the candidate will have experience working in fast paced integrated product teams with engineering, supply chain, quality, and production. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at Virgin Orbit’s aerospace facility in Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Support and improve the Supplier Quality Management System for LauncherOne, including the overall procedure, supplier assessments and audits, supplier risk mitigation, the supplier quality manual, production part approval process, and supplier development
  • Conduct supplier assessments to determine capability of potential and current suppliers
  • Assess relative risk of production suppliers to determine allocation of resources
  • Develop and execute supplier quality management strategy
  • Evaluate Production Part Approval Process / First Article Inspection submissions
  • Evaluate supplier production capacity, and develop and execute plans to ensure that all suppliers can meet future requirements
  • Provide technical support to suppliers to assist them with correcting quality problems
  • Interface with Manufacturing, Design and Quality to resolve supplier-driven issues
  • Coordinate and verify supplier corrective actions
  • Conduct audits at critical suppliers
  • Support the implementation of quality improvement, error proofing, inspection, and testing within the LauncherOne supply chain
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Purchasing to achieve quality, delivery, and cost improvement targets

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Supplier Quality or Manufacturing Engineer
  • At least 3 years of experience in aerospace, aviation, automotive, or consumer goods
  • Basic knowledge in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance
  • Strong knowledge of office software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
  • Knowledge of Quality Systems such as ISO9000, AS9100, and TS16949
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement

  • Knowledgeable in problem solving tools such as Six-Sigma, 8-D, Five Why, Fishbone Analysis, Is/Is not, and Red-X
  • Knowledgeable in quality analysis tools such as Statistical Process Control, Capability, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility, Design of Experiments, and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis
  • Knowledgeable of manufacturing processes such as composite fabrication, composite assembly, metal forming, forging, casting, machining, brazing, welding, anodizing, plating, printed circuit board fabrication and assembly, wire harness assembly, and mechanical assembly
  • Excellent communication skills (team, management, and suppliers)
  • Experience in a start-up environment
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and structured approach
  • Incredible energy and passion with a resourceful attitude
