Sports Medicine, Space Medicine, Longevity – Part 2 Fad or Fact?
This series chronicles my journey from bumbling health newbie, to discovering what is on the cutting edge of health science.
In Part 1 (Sports Medicine, Space Medicine, Longevity – Part 1 Cretin or Creatine?) I discussed how my son dislocated his shoulder whilst playing rugby. From this he researched the supplement Creatine, which has the potential to strengthen and protect his shoulder after surgery. I started taking Creatine at the same time, in order to test its safety for him. The experience has made me more open to other supplements which are clean, natural and legal.
In my youth I found going to a gym boring so I participated in several styles of martial art, to be fit for my passion of motor racing.
In later life, I didn’t want the pressure of “eating perfectly” whilst concentrating on business and other goals. Also I don’t have an overwhelming faith in “big pharma” which appears to have an interest in over prescribing for profit. I remember when a doctor visited me as a child (yes I am that old), they gave you something and you got better. Now it seems that doctors prescribe a drug that only suppresses symptoms, has to be taken forever and has side effects that are worse than the original concern.
My preference would be to eat correctly, but who is to say what “eating perfectly” is when the advice from nutritionists is often in conflict and has constantly changed.
For example:
- Margarine v Butter?
- Vegan v Carnivore?
- Is Fat or Sugar responsible for Obesity?
- Does Dairy help or hinder Osteoporosis?
- Are the side effects of Statins worse than Cholesterol?
- Do “Fat Days” keep your Metabolism high, or crash your good work?
I began by searching amongst the plethora of material on YouTube, for who could be a credible source.
One of the most prolific producers of health content is Dr Eric Berg.
- He has 10 million+ followers
- He has been going for many years
- He looks progressively healthier over time
- He doesn’t appear to be a user of Botox or plastic surgery
- He covers a wide range of ailments
- He provides clear description of causes
- He recommends beneficial foods and/or vitamins
- HOWEVER, EVERYTHING ends with Intermittent Fasting and Keto being the solution
So at the end of of every video I want to scream – “Tell me WHY”
I want to know what changes are being activated by Intermittent Fasting and Keto at a microscopic level, for me to trust them. Are they truly of use and not just the current fad, which will turn out to be a lot of aggravation for no gain – or worse actual harm?
So I wanted to know what was Doctor Berg’s field of specialist study, does he have an active lab, does he run clinical trials, does he have uncontested papers reviewed by peers?
With a little searching in his own material I found:
- Eric Berg is a chiropractic doctor
- He is not the originator or clinical tester of the solutions
Now that is not to say that his work is of little value. Far from it. He has done an outstanding job of identifying peoples concerns, looking for appropriate advice and explaining it in a clear and entertaining way that has helped masses of viewers. Indeed I have followed his advice for several items and found his advice to be of practical benefit. Also with such a large audience he may not be doing placebo controlled clinical trials, but the anecdotal responses from so many people can’t be completely discounted.
So ultimately the BIG TAKEAWAY for me was: IF Intermittent Fasting and Keto improve virtually all conditions rather than being specific to particular germs, bacteria or viruses – then they must be acting on some higher level to affect health.
So with a terrible mashing of metaphors again, the only option was to “take a deeper dive into the onion!”
