The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) always implements technology 4.0 that utilizes information and communication technology. The application of technology, which also utilizes IoT, artificial intelligence, and big data, is carried out in stages to support research and development in the aerospace and space fields.
This was conveyed by the Head of LAPAN Prof. Dr. Thomas Djamaludin was present as a keynote speaker at the Indonesia 4.0 event (19/08). Bringing up the topic of Application of Technology 4.0 in the Indonesian Aviation and Space Sector, Thomas said that the use of technology 4.0 has been used in all lines of fields handled by LAPAN. Starting from research and development of space and atmospheric science, remote sensing, also in the field of aviation.
In the field of space and atmospheric sciences, the existence of LAPAN centers spread across various regions was then accommodated in a single network which was then centered in Bandung. The monitoring results from these various centers are then processed to be presented in various forms of services, such as space weather monitoring and Decision Support Systems (DSS) such as SADEWA (Satellite Disaster Early Warning System). LAPAN also utilizes the data obtained to develop predictive models using deep learning such as solar flare and solar wind predictions , as well as sunspot detection and automatic magnetic polarization.
In the field of remote sensing, as an institution that has the authority to provide satellite imagery in Indonesia, LAPAN has long created an integrated ecosystem for utilizing remote sensing results to end users. LAPAN continues to develop data processing utilizing machine learning, artificial intelligence, and automation to improve the results and accuracy of processing the data obtained. Products produced through these developments include ZPPI (Fishing Potential Zone) and monitoring the growth phase of rice.
Regarding the aspect of flight, Thomas said that in the development of rockets, 4.0 technology is very widely used, starting from the manufacture of propellants, rocket design, to avionics systems. While in the field of aircraft, in addition to developing passenger aircraft, LAPAN also develops unmanned aircraft with various uses, such as cargo drones to support logistics and precision farming drones to support agriculture.
Currently, LAPAN is trying to prepare a more comprehensive downstream strategy so that the results of various research and development carried out can be more effective and can be felt by the benefits for the industry and society.
